Policies
This section is primarily for informing content owners of their specific responsibilities for creating and maintaining web sites. It outlines the process for establishing a new site, developing and managing content, and performing routine maintenance.
Questions related to web software or the actual publication process may be answered on the technology training site or by TIER support staff.
How do I get a SON web site?
TIER helps guide the SON web presence according to web best practices, one of which is that web sites should have as small of a footprint as possible while still effectively communicating necessary information to its audiences.
To request a site, fill out the web site request form.
What are the content requirements and guidelines?
Web content on SON sites should be:
- Appropriate for a public audience, or if for internal SON audiences, should be password protected. Content should also be "business-appropriate" to the School or University. Content that is not endorsed by the SON or which could be deemed damaging to the reputation of the School or University should not be published.
- Compliant with local, state and federal laws and school and university policies, rules, and regulations (including accessibility compliance with ADA Section 508).
Follow both the laws and policies governing copyright infringement (all published web content is copyrighted despite the absence of a copyright symbol), intellectual property rights and other applicable laws regarding libel, privacy laws, trademarks, obscenity, computer fraud, First Amendment rights, and protection of minors.
- Accurate and current (see maintenance).
- Consistent with industry, University, and School web best practices.
- Unique or non-redundant. Information should not be duplicated in numerous places, but rather links should connect readers to the most complete and official source.
Please contact TIER if you need guidance with any of the above items.
TIER reserves the right to remove or deactivate any content that presents unacceptable risk or which could damage the reputation of the School or University. In such cases efforts will be made to notify and work with the content owner to resolve the problem. Please report any apparent violation of policy or law on SON web sites to TIER.
What are the maintenance requirements and guidelines?
- Active Files: All public web pages must be a current, published, and linked component of a published web page. All development, test, duplicate, archived, or files that are not accessed by browsers should be stored elsewhere. Files that are deemed to be non-essential to the function or content requirements for the site will be subject to removal by TIER, with previous notice.
- Regular Review: Page content should be reviewed at least annually, and the date of the last review should be present in the footer. Pages which haven’t been reviewed in the last year will be subject to removal by TIER, with previous notice.
- Changes: If content owners or web editors associated with a web site change, or if a web site is no longer needed, please notify TIER.
