MN/MS Students: Thesis Options - Scholarly Project
Timeline for Scholarly Project Development

The following is a general time frame to consider for progression with your scholarly project. It may not apply if you are a part-time student.

First - Second Quarter: Begin to formulate and read on your topic of interest. Explore for a potential project advisor, using the faculty section of the School of Nursing Web page to assist you in identifying faculty with related expertise.

Second - Third Quarter: Discuss your ideas with relevant faculty (and in NMETH 520 lab, if applicable). Select a project advisor. Meet regularly with your project advisor. Complete membership of supervisory committee. Develop first draft of the project plan, including background knowledge and purpose.

Third - Fourth Quarter: Complete a systematic review of the literature. Complete conceptual phase of the project plan. Obtain approval of initial project plan by the supervisory committee. Include planned activities and expected outcomes. If applicable, record scholarly questions and project goals on a separate sheet. Notify committee members at least two weeks in advance that materials for review will be submitted. Faculty are usually unavailable to review project material during finals week or interim periods. The Masters Scholarly Project Initial Plan and Final Product Report and, when conducting research involving human subjects, Use of Human and Animal Subjects for Theses and Dissertations, forms must be approved prior to implementation.

Fourth - Fifth Quarter: After approval of the plan, begin course work and/or activities to fulfill the plan. Review Final Quarter Requirements.

Fifth - Final Quarter: Complete the project. Write presentation of findings. Time your final examination (project presentation) so that your final product may be approved by your supervisory committee by the last day of the quarter. Complete final quarter requirements.
