MN/MS Students: Thesis Options - Scholarly Project
Scholarly Project Requirements

A scholarly project must:

  1. Use at least one aspect of the research process as discussed in NMETH 520;

  2. Be relevant to the discipline or the advancement of nursing, within the context of advanced and specialized nursing practice;

  3. Communicate results, either orally or in writing. External dissemination of findings may or may not be necessary, considering the potential influence on institution- or program-based quality assurance or evaluation;

  4. Be completed by either the individual student or via group collaboration;

  5. When conducting research involving human subjects, must be preceded by completion and submission of the Use of Human and Animal Subjects for Theses and Dissertations form.

  6. Be developed through the completion of at least six (6) credits of course work that supports the student's primary focus of scholarly inquiry a) in nursing or b) in another discipline. The plan for these 6 credits must be approved by the supervisory committee BEFORE course work is begun. ALL students choosing the scholarly project option must take a minimum of 1 credit of NMETH 598 - Special Projects.

a. If a student's primary focus of scholarly inquiry is in nursing, projects must be completed in a minimum of 6 credits of NMETH 598 - Special Projects. Study in NMETH 598 will reflect an integration of knowledge gained from prior course work and will demonstrate an extension of knowledge within the student's focus of scholarly inquiry. Study in NMETH 598 may involve:
  • research dissemination;
  • research utilization;
  • exploration of issues in quality assurance;
  • a research practicum, including participation in a study team and/or work with an individual researcher or research facilitator;
  • clinical problem analysis;
  • a demonstration project;
  • the development of a scholarly paper, evaluation tool, film or proposal for submission to an external funding agency; and/or
  • participation in a public policy process.

b. If a student's primary focus of scholarly inquiry is in a discipline other than nursing, completion of a minimum of 5 credits of course work outside of NMETH 598 is required and must meet the goals identified by the student and the supervisory committee. Such students must also complete a minimum of 1 credit of NMETH 598.
