Faculty Academic Advisors

Faculty are assigned to advise MN or MS students throughout their programs of study. The faculty advisor for a master's student assures student progress in the focus area curriculum. Faculty may also work with a student to determine which courses constitute their individualized MS or MN program of study.

Within the student's first quarter of study, it is recommended that the student make an appointment with his/her faculty advisor to begin initial discussions about the student's goals, including the development of either a thesis or a scholarly project. Most School of Nursing faculty have nine-month appointments, and may or may not be on campus for advising in Summer Quarter. Faculty who serve in the capacity of advisor may or may not become the chair or a member of the student's supervisory committee.

Role of the Faculty Advisor

• Serves as the student's academic program advisor until a Chair of the Supervisory Committee has been selected by the student, or at the discretion of the specialty, throughout the student's program of study if the Chair is not affiliated with the specialty;
• Responds promptly to emails and engages in meetings/discussions with the student that help clarify professional goals and expected outcomes of the student's academic experience;
• Discusses potential faculty who may be appropriate guides for the student's thesis or scholarly project;
• With the student, develops the student's thesis or project plan; and
• Submits a note to the student's file in Academic Services following each advising session, including the date, description of the conference, comments, and signature.
