Frequently Asked Questions

  • When can I use the CENE?
The CENE is open Monday – Friday 8:00-5:00 (Unless otherwise stated). Special arrangement to use the Lab outside of these hours is possible and can be done by contacting the CENE at llab@u.washington.edu.
  • When do I use SimMan?
Scenarios using the Human Patient Simulators, like SimMan, provide near real life experience for assessment, decision making, communication and prioritization. Your clinical instructors will determine when the use of the simulators works best during the quarter.

  • When do we start IVs?
IV starts are an advanced skill and students are usually instructed on this skill at the end of their 1st year or sometime during their 2nd year.
  • Do we practice injections on each other?

Students practice injections on manikins and on each other. Students will need to sign an IV Starts Consent Form before any invasive procedure is done on them in the CENE.

  • Can I check out equipment?
Yes. Equipment can be checked out. Students are required to fill out an equipment check-out form and follow the CENE guideline for borrowing equipment. If equipment is not returned, students are held accountable. Equipment like BP cuffs and otoscopes may be check out for a week at a time.  Patient gowns can be checked out for an entire quarter.
  • When can I practice in the CENE outside my scheduled class?

Students need to contact the CENE to make arrangements to practice in the Lab outside of scheduled class time. Check CENE Make up & Independent Study Sesstions for Students page and the Request Form is available on the Web.

  • I am a graduate student. I want to do a special project in the lab. Who do I contact?

Any special projects done in the lab by faculty, TAs or students (simulation, teaching skills, evaluation) will be coordinated with the lab director. Check CENE Make up & Independent Study Sesstions for Students page and the Request Form is available on the Web.

  • How do I contact someone in the CENE?

Students can contact the CENE staff, meaning the director of the CENE and the CENE TAs by emailing the CENE at llab@u.washington.edu.

  • I left my book in the CENE Do you have a “lost and found”?
If items are left in the CENE such as books, coats, etc., they are placed in the “lost and found” bin which is next to the CENE office door. Items not claimed by the end of the quarter will be discarded or donated.
