The General Examination marks the passage from pre-doctoral student to candidate status.
With the endorsement of the supervisory committee, the examination may be taken after completing
a minimum of 60 credits. Students must familiarize themselves with
UW
Graduate School requirements for the General Examination and must register for
at least two (2) credits during the quarter the examination is taken.
To request a General Examination:
- Contact Academic Services in the School of Nursing to confirm that names of your current working supervisory
committee members are consistent with the names officially listed with the UW Graduate School.
- Complete the general examination application, including printing and obtaining
required signatures. A printed e-mail from a committee member confirming the date and time of approval may serve in
lieu of a signature. NOTE: You may NOT apply for your general examination on-line.
- Submit the completed form into Academic Services at least 22 days prior to your examination date. The application
must be submitted by Academic Services to the Graduate School at least three weeks ahead of the scheduled examination
date.
Pick up your warrant from Academic Services on the day of your exam, and return the signed
warrant to Betsy Mau in Academic Services after your exam is complete.
While the content and format of the general examination are determined by the supervisory committee
in collaboration with the student, the SoN Graduate Faculty recommends that the general examination
consist of a formal written examination with an oral component. The DNP components of advanced practice,
practice inquiry, and leadership should be evident in the examination. Three members of the committee
must be present to conduct and evaluate the general exam.
