All Students: School Overview - Mission and Goals

The University of Washington School of Nursing is a top-ranked component of a research university with an academic health center; a world-class school with global and local partners; and part of a three-campus university accountable to a state with pressing problems in access to education and health care. Our missions are closely related to each of these environments and each simultaneously influences our ability to promote excellence in all we do. At the beginning of a new century, the School's overarching goals are to address the challenges presented by the health care environment and to promote excellence in teaching, research, and service.

The School of Nursing's mission is to:
  • advance and preserve knowledge about human health ecology, including human responses to health and illness of individuals, families, groups, and communities; environments which do and do not support health; and interventions to improve health;

  • disseminate knowledge by educating the public and professionals through strategies that include and engage diverse learners; and

  • provide service that promotes the health and well-being of diverse individuals, families, communities, populations, and systems.

Vision for the School of Nursing

The Stragetic Plan for the School of Nursing (2000-2004) affirms commitment to a vision of the School as an internationally recognized:
  • Center of excellence in nursing research, engaged in advancing the fundamental science of human health ecology, developing and testing innovative models of care, and assessing the outcomes of health care systems;

  • Center for lifelong learning, educating nurses throughout their careers as clinicians, teachers, and scientists through innovative academic programs and continuing nursing education on campus and at distant sites;

  • Asset for promoting health and well-being through our service in partnerships with state, national, and global communities;

  • Resource for innovation through translating research findings into nursing practice and education, and applying knowledge derived from faculty practice to creative models for nursing service, education, and research;

  • Supportive community that values diversity of students, faculty, and staff.

We are committed to sustaining the excellence of the School of Nursing through pursuing the following goals:
  • providing innovative, high quality and accessible Academic Services;

  • promoting outstanding research scholarship;

  • extending the School's expertise and interest through service to professional organizations and communities;

  • advancing faculty practice opportunities consonant with a research intensive university;

  • promoting global involvement of our students and faculty and international students and visitors;

  • enhancing quality of work life in the School of Nursing; and recruiting and retaining a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
