All Students: Dean's Welcome

Welcome to the School of Nursing. I wish you much success and happiness in the nursing program as well as in your future professional career in nursing.

Nursing is an exciting and ever-changing profession. Nurses comprise the largest number of health professionals in the United States. There are many opportunities to provide nursing care services to people both in this country and abroad. Nurse professionals are now members of inter-disciplinary teams in clinics, hospitals and community settings. Nurse practitioners are filling critical health care needs in both urban and rural settings for portions of the population who have not received adequate health care. Nurse scientists conduct important research about a variety of health problems and how best to promote health, prevent disease, and care for people who are ill. Nurses also teach in schools of nursing, in colleges and universities throughout the world.

Our programs in the School of Nursing are changing constantly in order to prepare students to function effectively as professional nurses. The program you are entering is designed to prepare you as a professional nurse and to support your interests and goals. You will have many opportunities to study and work with people in a variety of health care settings such as community health agencies, clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, and emerging types of health facilities. Evaluate your learning through active self-assessment, and share your insights and needs with us as partners in your educational experiences.

The University of Washington School of Nursing is among the finest in the world. The faculty and staff are pleased you chose to study here. Please let us know how we can support you during your experience with us.
