Academic Services (AS) functions within the School of Nursing
primarily to serve students and prospective students. AS facilitates
student progress; helps to implement and evaluate curricula;
problem solves student academic issues; and leads recruitments
and admissions. AS is a resource for faculty, staff, and the
community. To accomplish our mission, we work in standing
teams (admissions, student services, site coordination, and
marketing), ad hoc teams, and as individual staff.
AS supports you through counseling resources and learning
support. BSN students also receive academic counseling with
Dagmar Schmidt, who coordinates the BSN program, handles academic
advising, schedules student clinical assignments, and acts
as an advocate on behalf of the BSN students with faculty
and other UW departments.
Academic Services will communicate with you in several ways.
Important course information, deadlines, and announcements
will be made via e-mail. Information posted on bulletin boards
outside T310 includes registration information, BSN clinical
placements, changes in classes or assignments, scholarship
opportunities, and announcements. Please check the bulletin
boards frequently. BSN and masters students have mail boxes
located in the student lounge (T441). Doctoral students have
carrels in assigned rooms and must designate a fellow student
to retrieve mail for the carrels in that room from the appropriate
mailbox in T310. Messages and information will be placed into
your mailbox.
Occasionally, we will need to communicate with you by letter
or telephone. It is essential that we have your current address
and telephone number and that you notify us of any changes,
including where you will be during breaks. Please also ensure
that the UW Registrar's Office has your most current address
on record. We will respect any instructions you give us concerning
the confidentiality of this information.
Finally, if there is a need to reach you in an emergency,
we have a copy of your academic schedule and will try our
best to find you if someone has called with an emergency.
We recommend leaving information about your current clinical
placement with family and friends, including the name and
phone number of the site as well as the name of the instructor/preceptor.
Please ask your family and friends to use this channel only
when other means of communication have not worked. The telephone
number is (206) 543-8736.
