SoN Laboratories

Application Guidelines

  • Researchers interested in using the School of Nursing laboratory services must first consult with the SoN lab manager Ernie Tolentino. This is to provide guidance on service availability, costs and general operating procedures of the lab. No research in the SoN lab can begin without this consultation occurring. Also, a grant intending to include SoN laboratory services must first consult with the lab manager or it will not be approved. Contact Ernie Tolentino at etolenti@u.washington.edu

  • When consultation with the SoN lab manager has occurred and funding for the research project is available, the researcher can download the service agreement (application form) below and fill in Exhibits A & C. Return the service agreement to Ernie Tolentino (etolenti@u.washington.edu) for review and completion of Exhibit B. This step is also required for School of Nursing faculty who are not required to pay for use of school space.

Service costs

  • The links below list the prices for purchasing SoN lab services. These figures can be used to incorporate the cost of using SoN lab services into a grant budget. Add a 3% inflation rate on all prices listed plus 3% for each year in a multi year grant. Remember, researchers cannot enter SoN lab services into a grant without first consulting lab manager Ernie Tolentino etolenti@u.washington.edu for confirmation of costs.

  • Select from the Internal or External cost columns in the following documents to determine your costs for using services in the SoN labs. The cost column titled “Internal” should be used by researchers who will pay for services using a UW budget number. The cost column titled “External” should be used by researchers who will not use a UW budget number. Remember, add 3% inflation per year to all budget years..
  • Cost for Clinical Rooms
  • Cost for Sleep Lab
  • Cost for Bio-Assays
  • Cost for Storage of Assays

Project Scheduling

Following approval of funding and completion of the service agreement, work with lab manager Ernie Tolentino (etolenti@u.washington.edu) to establish a schedule to conduct your research. The SoN labs are a shared use facility, so it is important to plan research activities as far in advance as possible.

Equipment Loan Guidelines

The Office for Nursing Research has a small inventory of scientific equipment. This equipment is loaned to faculty to help them with their research projects. Before the equipment is released to the faculty member for their research, we ask the faculty member to complete an on-line loan form. This is a simple forminforming us the type of equipment and the start-end dates it will be used. Depending on the value of the equipment, we may ask the faculty member to insure the equipment during the loan period.

It is not common, but it is possible a piece of scientific equipment can become lost during the research period. If a piece of scientific equipment loaned to you by the Office for Nursing Research should become lost, please do the following.

  • 1) Send an e-mail to Toni Still in the research office still@u.washington.edu informing him of the loss. Give a brief description on what steps you took to find the lost equipment.
  • 2) If the loss happened during loan to a subject, please do not include any information which would break confidentiality. A simple statement telling us the scientific equipment was loaned to a subject and was either lost or not returned.
  • 3) While not a loss issue, if the equipment loaned to you by the research office should stop working during the research period and need repair, please contact or send an e-mail to Toni Still still@u.washington.edu describing the problem.
  • Researchers can download the equipment loan form below and fill it in. Return the equipment loan form to Toni Still still@u.washington.edu
