Other Sponsors
While the majority of the grants at the School of Nursing are funded by NIH, HRSA or the UW, there are many other federal institutions and foundations that fund research and training initiatives. If you are confused by the requirements (or lack thereof) than feel free to contact the Grant Specialist for assistance. When working with unfamiliar sponsors, be sure to research the following topics.
Forms
- Instructions for applying for any federal grant (no matter which entity) will be found on grants.gov. Links to the proper forms will be included with the listing.
- Some private foundations have their own forms, some require you to make them up, and still others will use federal forms. Read the funding opportunity for directions.
Grant Narrative
- What sections are required?
- How many pages are allowed?
- What data is required to support the narrative?
- What format is required for the references?
Budgets
- Different levels of detail will be required. A full detailed budget will still be required for School of Nursing approval.
- Indirect costs - determine which rate is to be used and what costs may be used to determine the indirect costs. Even if a rate is not listed in the funding opportunity, it does not mean that the University's standard rate will be accepted.
Other information
- Biosketches - what information is required and what format is used?
- University information - sometimes this information is requested via standard forms. Other times, it will be requested without any format.
- What abstracts are required? Some funding opportunities will require more than one abstract. Abstracts will also vary in the level of technical language used.
Contacts
- Make sure to find the names, email and/or phone numbers for persons who will be receiving and coordinating review of the grants.
- Be sure to confirm answers to any questions that are not included in the funding opportunity. If there is no page limit listed for the narrative, confirm this before writing 200 pages of methods. If biosketches are not mentioned, confirm that they are not required. Many agencies and foundations do not have staff who are experienced with writing opportunities. Lack of direction may be an oversight, not an invitation to be creative.
