NIH Appendix GuidelinesCurrent NIH Appendix guidelines
Allowed materialsBefore planning for appendices, read the funding opportunity. Some opportunities will have a different limit for articles, not allow some material or require information that is not normally allowed. The following is a list of appendix guidelines for all funding opportunities that do not have specific requirements. Published Manuscripts - Copies of articles are no longer allowed unless they are not posted online or on Pub Med. If you would like to direct reviewers to an article, include the url or the pub med ID number with the reference. Do not include this information in the appendix. There is no longer a limit on the number of articles referenced, but keep in mind that the reviewers will be unlikely to read all the articles if there are more than the old limit of ten. Use your best judgment in choosing the number. If an article is not available online (because of availability or because it is in press), than you may include a copy in the appendix. There may be no more than three articles in the appendix. Detailed Picture or Graphs - Details of color pictures may only be included in paper applications. The electronic grants allow high-resolution and color to be distributed to all reviewers. Human Subjects Forms - Surveys, questionnaires, instruments, and other data collection tools may be included as necessary. Excessive material will likely detract from the application and not improve the review. There is no limit, but PIs should use their good judgment. FormatElectronic Grants - Appendices should be attached in pdf format in the appropriate field on the research plan form. Paper Grants - Applications must be submitted in pdf format burned on CD-ROM. Five identical CD-ROMs should be used. CD-ROMs should be labeled with the PI's name and the grant title. |
