Modular BudgetsModular budgetsModular Budgets are budgets below $250,000 which are requested in "modules" or chunks of $25,000. These modules include only direct costs and exclude any indirect costs paid to subcontracts. NIH does not require budget detail except the number of calendar months for each personnel and sub-contract (consortium) costs. NIH also does not require any budget justification of costs other than personnel, sub-contracts and requests for normally disallowed costs (such as food.) UW requirements for modular budgets]In the past, the UW required the budget to be broken down into categories for the GC-1. As of 2007, they will no longer require any budget detail for modular budgets. When filling out the eGC-1, the total direct costs are to be filled in the "unallocated" line on the budget page. SON requirements for modular budgetsThe School of Nursing, however, requires budget detail for any budget no matter what the UW or sponsor detail requirements. This is so the department and school can determine if the investigators can carry out the proposed project within the proposed funding parameters. All budgets that originate in the School of Nursing must include an internal budget worksheet. This budget sheet should show each item, person, or service adequately described and with a reasonably estimated cost. The budget should also allow reasonable inflation and a calculation of indirect costs. Grant preparers are to prepare the eGC-1 budget as described above with no indirect cost detail. However, the budget worksheet should be routed to the Office for Nursing Research and the appropriate departmental reviewers. Budgets from elsewhere in the University do not need to use the same budget worksheet or provide detail for their entire grant. However, any costs associated with the School of Nursing or any of their personnel should be submitted to the reviewers in full detail. Each cost must be described adequately, separately, and with a reasonably estimated and inflated costs. |
