Research Plan

Item A

Filled from main page

Item B: Research Training Plan

Fields 1-5

The research plan should be written using the provided template. When the document has been finished, checked for space limitations, and edited, each section must be saved into a separate document. Even though the pages are not printed, the same formatting specifications apply. The narrative must be written with

  • Arial, Helvetica, Palatino Linotype or Georgia font in black.
  • At least 11 point fond. Tables and may have smaller font, but the words must be easily legible and only use the requested fonts.
  • Greek letters or special characters are allowed when needed, but they must be 11 points.
  • All margins must be 1/2 inches on all sides.
  • Use no headers, footers, or page numbering on the final documents. Headers, footers and page numbers will be added automatically after the grant is submitted.

To separate the sections into separate documents:

  1. Break the document so that each section starts on a new page. Place the cursor at the beginning of the section, before the section heading. Insert a page break. This can be done by entering Ctrl + Enter or by selecting Insert, then Break, and then selecting Page Break (normally the default selection.) See picture instructions.
  2. Note the pages for each section.
  3. Convert each section to pdf format. See picture instructions.
    • Select File, then Print, or enter Ctrl + P. Do not press the printer icon on the tool bar as this will not let you select the print properties.
    • In the print dialogue box, select PDF writer as your printer.
    • Under Page Range there is a field that allows you to enter which pages you want to print. Enter the pages for the section that you are saving.
    • Click OK.
    • The PDF writer will bring up a Save As box for you to enter the name of the file that you want to save to. Save the file in a folder with the rest of the grant files. Use the file names to name the file. There will probably be 20-30 pdf files to upload, so you want to be sure not to get any of them confused.

When all the documents are ready, you may upload them. Click on the Add Attachment button next to the section heading and use the browser to find and click on the appropriate attachment. As noted before, make sure that you are uploading the correct document. Once you have uploaded the document, it becomes part of the PureEdge file and you do not need to include the PDF file with any submissions.

Only one document can be uploaded into fields. In instances when there will be multiple items (Letters of Support and perhaps Consortium/Contractual Arrangements) scan all items into one document before uploading.

If an item does not apply, you do not need to upload a file for it.

The references section is not located on this page. See Other Project Information, Item 8.

Human Subjects

Are Human Subjects involved?

This field cannot be updated on this form. It will prefill from Item 1 on the "Other Project Information" form. If this is "no," skip the next seven items.

8. Human Subjects Involvement Indefinite?

Click "yes" only if you are unsure if you will use data from human subjects or if your research methods are undeveloped and you cannot complete the sections on recruitment and protection of human subjects. Do not use this option if you are simply running out of time. If your methods are developed but your human subjects plan is not, it will count against you.

If you click "no," fill out the Human Subjects section of the narrative and upload it. The same formatting parameters as above apply.

Other Research Training Plan Sections

Are Vertebrate Animals involved?

This field cannot be updated on this form. It will prefill from Item 2 on the "Other Project Information" form. If this is "no," skip the next two items.

15. Vertebrate Animals Use Involvement Indefinite?

Click "yes" only if you are unsure if you will use vertebrate animals or your methods are undeveloped and you cannot complete the sections ethical use.

If you click "no," fill out Item 16: Vertebrate Animals and upload it. The same formatting parameters apply.

Items 17-20

Use the following templates and upload.

17. Select Agent Research

Only complete this section if you are using materials that can be used for terrorist activities. If you are unsure about your materials, contact the Grant Specialist.

18. Resource Sharing Plan

Only complete this section if you are using model organisms. Once again, if you think this might apply to you, contact the Grant Specialist.

19. Respective Contributions

Required. See template.

20. Selection of Sponsor and Institution

Required. See template.

21. Responsible Conduct of Research

Required. See template.

C. Other Research Training Plan Sections

Human Embryonic Stem Cells

See grant specialist if stem cells are included. (But since our labs currently aren't set up for this, it is unlikely.)

Candidate

2. Alternate Phone Number

Enter a cell phone or number different from that entered on the first page. As before, they will use this information to contact you after your training period is done so it should be as permanent as possible.

3. Graduate Degree Earned (if applicable):

Enter the highest graduate degree you have earned this far.

4. Degree Sought During Proposed Award:

Enter the degree that will be conferred when you finish your current program.

5. Field of Training for Current Proposal:

Indicate the proposed area of research training according to the Fields of Training listed in the drop down menu. The menu includes several main areas, each with subcategories. Select the subcategory that corresponds to the proposed area of research training, and provide both the number and name of the subcategory, e.g., 2470 Virology. If the Fields of Training listing does not provide a good descriptor, use the closest subcategory from the list. (This information is used for reporting purposes only and is not used for study section assignments.)

6. Current Or Prior Kirschstein-NRSA Support?

Enter yes if you have had support during a previous degree or if you have been part of the Biobehavioral Nursing Training Grant. If yes, enter in the requested information.

If you are unsure of dates or grant numbers, contact the coordinator for the training grant.

If you are unsure of previous support, contact the Grant Specialist. If the support was at the School of Nursing, she can look it up for you. If the support was else where, she can also help you track down the information.

7. Applications for Concurrent Support?

Choose "yes" if you have applied for, or been awarded any support that would duplicate NRSA support. (Funds that must be used for tuition or stipend.) Scholarships that allow discretionary uses of funds should not be included. Other NRSA appointments (such as the Biobehavioral grant) or Teaching Assistant appointments should not be included as those will end when the individual NRSA begins.

8. Goals for Fellowship Training and Career

See Template

9. Activities Planned Under This Award

See Template

10. Doctoral Dissertation and Other Research Experience

See Template

11. Citizenship

Use the selection that best describes your status.

12-13

Leave blank.

D. Budget

Leave blank - Grant specialist will fill this part out.

E. Appendix

The Appendix field can hold an infinite number of attachments. However, NIH will only accept a total of 10 attachments. Any applications with more than that will be returned with errors.

Each attachment will appear as a file separate from the main grant file in the ERA Commons. The commons will name the files for you so even if you call the attachments "Appendix A," "Appendix B," etc. this will not show up in the commons.

The first attachment will be named "Appendix."

The second attachment will be named "Appendix 2"

The third attachment will be named "Appendix 3"

and so on until appendix 10.

If you are referring to these files in the narrative, it is best to refer to them in this way. This means, that you will have to determine appendix material and organization before finalizing the narrative.
