Budget details FAQs:

The new form does not let me put in the information that I used to include on the old budget forms.  How do I enter that into the limited fields?

Just enter the totals in the fields and save all calculations, explanations, and break downs for the budget justification.  The budget page was made to give quick information for the reviewers.

Isn’t it better that I put everything into the budget justification, “just in case” since there aren’t any limitations on the page limits?

The reviewers need to find information and they want to get it quickly.  While frustrating a budget reviewer will not affect your scientific score, it won’t help you any.  It’s better to stick to the bare bones so that the required information is easier to find.

There is not enough room for my methods.  Since there isn’t any limitation on the budget justification, then can I put a timeline, recruitment plan, or other narrative piece in there as long as I discuss it in the context of a budget?

Absolutely not.  First, this is caught while the grant is being prepared for review and they see it for what it is – an extension of the methods – then it will be returned for exceeding the page limit.  Second, the scientific reviewers do not review the budget and they may simply think that a piece is missing.

The sponsor isn’t asking for budget detail and now OSP is not asking for the detail.  Why do I have to give details to the School of Nursing?

The School of Nursing is pledging to carry out the research when they approve their grant and will be responsible for any budget shortfalls.  The School of Nursing approval needs to ensure that the costs will be adequate for the project.

The sponsor isn’t asking for budget detail for my subcontract.  Do I need to provide it?

The budget detail required is ultimately decided by the sponsor.  The subcontract is not applying to the sponsor for funding, they are applying to the UW and the UW requires budget detail.
