Consultation Services

Both faculty and students are invited to utilize the individual and group consultation services. Faculty have priority if conflicts in appointment times should occur.

Student statistical & research design support services

If consultation time is not available from the Office for Nursing Research methodologists, the following services within the University of Washington are available for student support.

  • The Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences
  • The Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology
  • The Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology (CSDE) is an interdisciplinary research Center, supporting all University of Washington students and faculty with interests in demography and/or ecology. Demographic research covers a broad spectrum of topics, including issues related to health, AIDS, crime, welfare policy, family, sex roles, race, ethnicity, segregation, gender, inequality, poverty, family planning, and environmental issues.

As part of our mandate as a research Center, any student with an interest in demography can become an affiliate and use CSDE computing services. Because of the lack of resources available at many students' home departments, CSDE is often a primary source of computing support for graduate students in the social sciences. We currently have 550 student account holders who rely on CSDE's computing services, and the number is ever growing, up 25% from this time last year.

  • STATISTICS TUTOR & STUDY CENTER
  • Located in the library in McCarty Hall. The Center is open 20 hours a week—plus extra hours prior to exams—but now there are as many as three regularly scheduled tutors at any one time, plus more at peak periods. Most visitors are students taking Department of Statistics courses, but the facility also welcomes students taking statistics courses in other disciplines, such as business or psychology.

all of the Center’s tutors are skilled teachers with previous UW teaching experience. In addition, most statistics faculty choose to hold some of their office hours at the Center

The Math Sciences Computing Center (MSCC)

The MSCC student computing lab is located in the basement of the Communications Building, housed in rooms B-022 and B-027. The lab has been operating in this location for several years, and is used by many students. While the main focus of the lab is support for discipline specific computing, all UW students have free access to this lab. The MSCC is an interdisciplinary unit serving the computing needs of students in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Math, Computer Science and Engineering, and the ACMS (Applied Computational Mathematical Sciences). Some of the courses that routinely use the MSCC lab are: Math 307, 308, 407, 444/445, 464/5/6; Stat 390, 311, 421, 423, 481; Applied Math 301, 351, 352; and CSE 373, 413. These courses are taken by a large number of students in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. Most students come to our lab in order to have access to the specialized software required for doing homework and projects in their courses. So the fundamental use of the lab is for drop-in computing. Some instructors also hold office hours, and/or organized class meetings, in the lab. Students work at their own computer in these sessions, with help available from their instructor.
