This proposal addresses the future of Long-term Care (LTC) utilization and financing in the State of Washington. The relative proportion of older adults in the United States is rapidly expanding as baby-boomers reach retirement age. These changing demographics and escalating health and residential care costs threaten the future of geriatric care and the financial stability of the State. In July, 2006, the State of Washington joined eight other states in launching a national LTC Awareness Campaign, “Own Your Future”. The goal of the campaign was to increase awareness of the importance of LTC planning in order to increase private contributions to LTC costs and reduce burden on public finances. The present proposal will evaluate the effectiveness of the Washington campaign using a consumer telephone survey with 500 campaign targets. The project will provide valuable pilot information regarding how Washington State residents perceived the “Own Your Future” campaign and acted upon its advice. It will also provide new data on consumer attitudes about LTC insurance, and provide the basis for a future extramural policy evaluation grant to study the decision-making mechanisms of LTC planning and finance in the State of Washington. |
