The funding for the grant supporting the Quentin N. Burdick Traineeships has been eliminated due to recent federal budget cuts. As a result, there will be no traineeships offered after Spring 2006. Please continue to check this site for updates, as we hope to have funding restored in the future.

UCONJ 444A Interdisciplinary Rural Health Seminar
4 meetings per quarter
Offered Summer 2006, Autumn 2006 then every Autumn.
This one-credit interdisciplinary rural health seminar introduces the student to the process of forming and maintaining interdisciplinary collaboration. The learning methods include multi-point videoconferenced case studies and seminar presentations.
This seminar course focuses on interdisciplinary rural health. We cover topics that range from clinical issues to public health and beyond. Every quarter, graduate students from various schools (such as Social Work, Nursing, Dentistry, Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacy, MEDEX, and Health Services Research) participate in the seminar.
Course Objectives
- Define interdisciplinary health care teams.
- List components and variables that affect team function.
- Identify developmental phases of interdisciplinary health care teams.
- Describe challenges to the formation and maintenance of interdisciplinary health care teams in rural areas.
- Practice active participation in interdisciplinary team discussion and problem-solving during case studies.
- Develop skills conducive to forming and maintaining interdisciplinary health care teams in rural areas.
UCONJ 444B Core Competencies in Rural Health - Web Course
Offered Summer quarter
This 2 credit interdisciplinary web course is open to all Health Sciences students. The course provides students with information about rural health from a variety of perspectives. The competencies include:
- Basic definitions
- Resources for rural health
- Access and barrier issues
- Funding and delivery of rural health care
- Interdisciplinary teams in rural health
- Health outcomes and disparities in rural populations
- Strategies for delivery of care
- Practice issues
- Cultural competence
- Other special topics
This class never meets in person; it is entirely web-based. Material is delivered by video- stream, power point files, on-line discussion boards, and websites. All coursework is asynchronous; therefore, there is no specific time to be on the discussion board. The requirements are weekly 2-page papers and participation in the discussion board twice a week. There is no final exam or paper.

- To foster mastery in rural health core competencies.
- To advance interdisciplinary perspectives on rural health.
- To promote interdisciplinary problem-solving approaches to rural health issues and challenges.
