ePortfolio and Artifact Instructions

If you're using ePortfolio for the first time, you need to accept the template that I distributed to you. Click on the file here for instructions.

Step 1: Preparing Your Artifacts

Artifacts, such as papers completed for course work, Powerpoint presentations, community project, or meeting minutes, are good evidence for your achievement of public health and collaborative leadership competencies. To place artifacts in your ePortfolio, you first need to store these documents in a folder on your computer hard drive called NCLIN (or something easy for you to recognize). From this folder, you will retrieve these documents and place them as artifacts in your ePortfolio.

Step 2: Attaching Artifacts to Your ePortfolio

Using the list of competency pages under Table of Contents, click on the page that you want to work on:

1. Select “Attach Artifact.” You'll see a menu selection box, "Create a New Artifact and Attach it":

  • Artifact Type: Select artifact type, "File from Hard Drive."
  • Artifact File*: Use Browse to find the folder/document that you want as an artifact.
*Note: Artifact File will appear after you select "File from Hard Drive" under Artifact Type.
  • Artifact Title: Give the artifact a name.
  • Artifact Location: Select the "My Artifacts."

2. Once you finish, click the button, "Create Artifact." The Artifact menu will close, and you will see the competency or the assignment portfolio page. You should see your artifact attached to the page.

3. After you review the page, click on "Save." [AN IMPORTANT STEP!]

4. Then, click on "Finished." After you click that button, you're back to the Table of Contents page of your portfolio.

5. Repeat Step 2 for each competency page that you want to update. Move to Step 3 when you are satisfied with your changes and ready to submit your ePortfolio to your academic advisor.

Step 3: Submitting Your Competency Pages

1. Click on “Submit” on the bottom of your Table of Contents page. You will see a list of portfolio competency pages on your screen.

Note: Although it seems like you are submitting your ePortfolio to Jenny Tsai as the line suggests, your academic advisors will have access to your ePortfolios. Dr. Tsai is listed because she is the creator of your ePortfolio template.

2. Select the page(s) that you want to submit. Click on "Submit" on the bottom of the page when you finish.

3. Once you submit, you'll get a message, "Your portfolio pages have been submitted to the instructor". Click on "Okay” to close the message box.

4. Now, you are back to the Table of Contents page of your portfolio. The pages that were submitted will be marked with an "S" in front.

Step 4: Notify Your Academic Advisor to Review Your Portfolio

Send an email to your advisor to let her/him know that your portfolio is ready for review.

Note: Be sure you complete Step 4. Once you submit your portfolio, you will NOT be able to access it until it has been reviewed and (electronically) returned by your advisor. None of your advisors will check their Catalyst accounts on a regular basis. To avoid a long wait, your email alert will be extremely useful.

Directions to Saving Artifacts and Keeping Your ePortfolio After Graduation

If you are graduating and want to keep your ePortfolio, you may make MyUW.net your Internet service provider. There is a complimentary service, or a fee-based premium service. You will be able to access your ePortfolio with attached artifacts.

If you are graduating or want to store your ePortfolio artifacts on your personal computer, memory disk, or burn them on a CD, this is what you will do:

  • From the face page of your ePortfolio, look for the button that says "unpublish."
  • Click on it and follow the directions.
  • Publish your ePortfolio.
  • Then, go back to the face page of your ePortfolio and click on your URL to go to your published ePortfolio.
  • Click on each competence, find the artifact and download it to your storage device. You cannot download the ePortfolio software.

An easier way is to just store each of your documents on a separate memory disk, CD or whatever external storage device.
