- The fee for visiting scholars is $500 for the first three-month term, $450 for
subsequent terms. Thus the fee for a twelve-month appointment is $1850. This amount cover
your visa fee, email account, internet access, telephone, work space, administrative and
other costs to the School of Nursing during your stay.
- To request a position as a visiting scholar, submit a statement of objectives,
anticipated outcomes, a proposed program of study or activities, and time and duration of
the visit. If possible, please suggest a potential faculty sponsor. All scholarly activities
that occur during your stay must adhere to those described in your statement. You may
submit your application by e-mail and should attach a copy of your curriculum vitae.
Please send your application and inquiries to Sarah Ross, Director of International
Programs, at sarross@u.washington.edu.
- Each visiting scholar must have a faculty sponsor. If your initial inquiry does not
specify a faculty sponsor, it will be referred to a faculty member whose interests match
yours, or to the chair of the department that offers the program(s) in which you are
interested. Although there may be faculty members with compatible interests to yours,
other commitments may make it impossible for a faculty member to serve as a sponsor at the
time you wish to visit. We regret that the School of Nursing cannot accept all applicants
for visiting scholar positions and must refuse some because of space limitations or
unavailability of an appropriate faculty sponsor.
- The director of international programs for the School of Nursing and the department
faculty sponsor will work together to arrange your visit, with the department providing
advice on all academic matters and the director of international visitors providing
administrative support on issues such as visas and university registration.
- As a foreign visiting scholar, you will need a J-1 visa in order to stay in the
United States. After the details of your visit have been determined, the director of
international visitors will initiate the visa application process and send the necessary
forms for you to take to a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to secure the visa.
- Visa regulations do not allow a J-1 visiting scholar to use personal or family funds
as the primary source of support. You must have financial support from an institution such
as your university, a government agency, or a foundation.
