UPDATE ON EFFORTS TO EXPAND GLOBAL OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS
April 2008

The UW School of Nursing is committed to expanding global opportunities for students that include course work, research, service learning, and clinical practice. While the School has mechanisms for undergraduate students to study abroad with UW faculty, the School aims to but does not yet have a mechanism for graduate students to fulfill degree program requirements at international sites. This message is one of a series of planned updates to inform the School community of progress being made toward meeting this aim.

At the current time, Sarah Ross, Director of International Programs, is communicating with University administration to explore frameworks and policy that might allow the School of Nursing to take next steps in the development of international possibilities for its graduate students. Some of the questions that will be addressed in the process include legal and regulatory issues, appropriate restrictions on clinical and/or research experiences, faculty involvement and liability, selection of suitable overseas partners, third-party relationships, projected time for roll out implemented with due diligence, and student status issues.

Students currently enrolled in a School of Nursing program who have questions regarding these issues may sign up at the front desk in Room T310 to be invited to a May 2008 question and answer session. Updates will be posted on this page.

The School of Nursing encourages students at all degree levels to develop an understanding of global health issues and of cultural, economic, and social factors that affect health and healthcare in the United States as well as abroad. The school provides opportunities to help students learn about health in cultures that are different than their own, including Citizens of the World Awards, faculty-led short (one to three weeks) study abroad programs, one-term faculty-led undergraduate study abroad programs, and options for independent international study or research at partner schools of nursing. The University of Washington Office of International Programs & Exchanges also offers many opportunities for students to travel and study abroad.

UW Office of International Programs & Exchanges

The UW Office of International Programs & Exchanges (IP&E) site provides information about numerous study abroad programs, particularly for undergraduates. Some are organized and led by UW faculty; some are organized by other universities and colleges in the US and abroad, with the UW accepting credits from these schools. Many of these are not compatible with nursing curriculum, but there are some summer opportunities with health components. IP&E also offers some scholarships for students participating in UW study abroad programs, such as the School of Nursing Thailand Study Abroad Program. Students can apply for such scholarships after they have been accepted to a study abroad program. For more information, click here.
