The R. Hunter Simpson Global Service Learning Fellowship gives students the opportunity to
pursue meaningful service learning and immersion experiences in health care and society in
cultures very different from their own. A top priority is global health in an international
context, but cross-cultural work in this country also qualifies for this support.
The Simpson Global Service Learning Fellowship aims to support students in pursuing international
service learning opportunities that address health disparities for individuals, families, and
communities around the globe. The School of Nursing is grateful to the Simpson family for
providing this support for innovative student service learning experiences.
The student applicant identifies and proposes their own independent service learning and
immersion experience and identifies a faculty sponsor in the School of Nursing. The Simpson
Fellowship does not support the ongoing and usual academic or clinical assignments necessary to
meet course objectives, but instead supports service learning experiences that extend
significantly beyond course requirements. The Simpson Global Service Learning Fellowship provides
$5,000 to be used to pay tuition, airfare, and other costs directly associated with the proposed
global service learning experience.
The applicant must be a matriculated student at the University of Washington School of Nursing.
The applicant’s proposal must present clearly stated objectives for a service learning experience,
and be supported by a faculty recommendation (see form). For complete application information,
