Where: Kane Hall, Room 120
Richer countries have long relied on recruiting health care workers – especially nurses – from poorer countries to provide medical care, rather than improving the recruitment and retention of homegrown care providers. Research shows about one in four doctors and one in 20 nurses trained in Africa is working in one of the leading industrial countries. The migration of health workers is a complicated issue that may impact patients and their families in surprising ways. Dr. Stilwell explores the question of why migration matters in health care – who wins and who loses?
Speaker: Dr. Barbara Stilwell is a senior scientist in the Human Resource Department at the World Health Organizaton in Geneva, Switzerland. Her area of interest is the impact of global issues on the health workforce, specializing in education and the supply and demand factors that affect performance. She also has held appointments in the Royal College of Nursing.

The UW School of Nursing hosts its Nurses Recognition Banquet each year during National Nurses Week to honor outstanding nurses and nursing leaders. (See the list of winners from previous years.) This celebration, which debuted in 1980, acknowledges the many ways the profession of nursing improves health and touches lives. Each year, the school presents the Distinguished Alumni Award, Distinguished Research Award, Humanitarian Award and Outstanding Volunteer Award.
This year's keynote speaker, acclaimed writer and educator Eric Liu, discussed how to find and be a guiding light by sharing invaluable lessons from people whose classrooms are boardrooms, arenas, concert halls, theaters, kitchens and places of worship. Liu offers inspiration for making a difference in other’s lives and being open to allowing others to make a difference in ours. He reminds us that we have the capacity to be both teachers and students throughout our lives.
Liu is the author of Guiding Lights: The People Who Lead Us Toward Our Purpose in Life, a fellow at the New America Foundation and writer for the online magazine Slate. Liu served as a speechwriter for President Bill Clinton during his first term in office and White House deputy domestic policy adviser in the second term. After the White House, he was an executive at the digital media company RealNetworks. He now lives with his daughter in Seattle, where he teaches at the University of Washington's Evans School of Public Affairs and hosts a cable program called "Seattle Voices." He is a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School.
