Project Title: CAM MSW Curriculum Model

Project Description: = The development of = integrative health/CAM curriculum modules for graduate social work students. These modules may be used as components of a broader course on health care social work practice and/or utilized as a freestanding elective. In additio= n, this material may be used, with modifications, in a BA level course on soci= al work in health settings.

2. Name: Diana M. Taibi, PhD, RN

Project Title: Movement Therapies = for Osteoarthritis Symptoms and Disability in Older Adults

Project Description: = Arthritis is the #1 cause of disability in the US, and more than 50% of persons over 65 years o= ld have osteoarthritis (the most common arthritis type). Exercise is beneficial for OA, but less than 1/3 of older adults get regular physical activity. Therefore, I have written an application for a K01 Mentored Scientist Development Award from the National Institutes of Health to prepa= re for an ongoing program of research on movement therapies- yoga and Tai Chi-= for older adults with OA. My goal is to develop a specific evidence-based= yoga program that can be taught by trained laypersons in the community, much like the current “Tai Chi for Arthritis” supported by the Arthritis Foundation.

Project Title: Pediatric Complementary and Alternat= ive Medicine Website

Project Description:<= span style=3D'font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Times New Roman","s= erif"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'> I developed a websi= te to provide education to University of Washington School of Nursing faculty about pediatric complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This website is important because current available resources about pediatric CAM are limited. As a result, many pediatric health= care providers feel unprepared to provide their patients with education about CAM. It is hoped that by educ= ating nursing faculty, they will in turn educate the= ir students, the health care providers of the future.

4. Name: David Koelle, MD=

Project Title: CAM&nbs= p;approach for recurrent herpes simplex virus infections<= /span>

Project Description:<= span style=3D'font-size:12.0pt;line-height:115%;font-family:"Times New Roman","s= erif"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'> HSV-1 a= nd HSV-2 are lifelong infections that are prevalent in the US. Existing therapy is limited to ant= iviral drugs that do not eliminate the virus from latency. Drugs can be taken daily to prevent symptomatic recurrences, shedding, and sexual transmission but some patient= s do not like this modality. There= is biological plausibility to mind-body interactions that could influence the biology of HSV infection. Rea= ctions to HSV infection are also quite variable between persons. Interventions that changed coping = styles could also improve patient well-being, even if viral reactivation was unchanged. The presentation w= ill focus on study design and outcome measures rather than an intervention specifically designed for HSV. A somewhat generic relaxation-response inducing secular meditation is envisag= ed as the study intervention.

Project Title: A study to evaluate the impact of meditation on addiction-disorders

Project Description: The ‘mindR= 17; as we know it is a minefield of thoughts and emotions. Oscillating thoughts constantly take us between the past and the future and we rarely rest with awareness in the present moment. During this process of constant oscillatio= n of the mind, different emotional patterns are activated and many of them are b= ased in memory. Recent research shows that the amygdala (the center of emotion) and the hippocampus (the center for memory), both housed in the limbic system, act in concert when emotion meets memory. Specifically, the amygdala can modulate the enc= oding and storage of the hippocampal dependant memori= es while the hippocampus influences amygdala respo= nse to emotional stimuli based on interpretation and recording of the emotional significance of events (Phelps, 2004*). Many of the habitual emotional patt= erns we find ourselves caught in are based in an emotional recording in memory (= samskaras= in Sanskrit).

What does meditation do? Meditation works on the mind. Cathartic meditations work to release the old recordings and stored memories. A heightened level of awareness of the present moment slowly brea= ks our habitual patterns. The meditation technique we will try is one that simultaneously eliminates deep-rooted engraved memories and infuses silence into the mind. The technique will be described in detail at the end of the = talk and prior to the meditation session.

6. Name: Anjana Kundu, MD=

Project Title: Complementary Medicine and You: What you need to know about therapies and its providers

Project Description: Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) amongst Americans is widesp= read especially amongst patients with chronic illnesses and pain disorders, but consumers do not feel they are adequately informed about CAM therapies and = they desire more information about CAM. Most conventional clinical providers also feel inadequately informed to address questions related to CAM. Objective: To provide information = for families and consumers addressing basic information related to various CAM modalities, training needed, qualifications of t= heir providers and some experiential and practical issues related to those modalities. Methods: 6-8 sessions of an educat= ional and experiential series will be offered free of cost via Children’s Hospital in Spring/Summer 2009. Each sessions wi= ll have 30-35 minutes educational session, a break followed by practical/experiential session for 30-45 minutes. This series will be advertised via Marcom department at Children= 217;s, both within Children’s and in the community. Funding for this project will be sought through Funds for Excellence at Children’s.

7. Name: Marcia Killien, PhD, RN, FAAN

Project Title: Gender Influences on Preference, Use, and Effectiveness of Complementary & Alternative Therapies

= &nb= sp; Project Description: Current priorities of NIH Office of Women’s Health include identifying the differential effects of therapies on men and women. This knowledge will aid the development of gender-sensitive and gender-tailored interventions. The influence of sex and gender on CAM therapies has not been described. The purpose of this project was to complete a systematic review = of literature to describe gender influences on preference, use, and effectiven= ess of CAM therapies. A search of the PubMed databa= se and related articles was completed for papers meeting the following criteria: published since 2002, in English, including both men and women, available online in full text format, and excluding studies of children. Results show= ed that women have greater use of CAM therapies at all ages and across multiple conditions and therapies. Gender differences in effectiveness of CAM therap= ies were examined in 37 research reviews and 26 individual studies. Only one research review discussed gender differences in effectiveness and many did = not report gender of study participants. Of the individual study reports, 38.5% analyzed results for gender differences; of these half (n=3D5) found differ= ences by gender in effectiveness of the CAM therapy studied. = Small samples was a limitation to gender analyses. Future CAM research sho= uld include attention to analysis of gender differences as a way to influence gender-tailored practice.

Project Description: This is a curriculum for rehabilitation medicine residents about cancer rehabilitation that integrates evidence based medicine treatments for CAM as well as more traditional rehabilitation techniques for cancer survivors.

Project Descr= iption: In this project we reviewed and pre= sented evidence on selected CAM approaches for appetite control and weight management. The information gained will be:

Incorporated into future undergraduate and graduate courses in the UW SoN
Included in a HRSA training grant application focused on chronic disease and care
Incorporated into a study of preoperative and postoperative care of patients undergoing we= ight loss surgery
Applied to future study of patients in a primary health care clinic serving medically underserved clients.

Project Title= : Integrative Health In Psychiatry Curriculum

Project Descr= iption: The curriculum designed for Psychia= try Residents will cover didactic and experiential sessions on Integrative Heal= th relevant in Psychiatry. Project Title= : Complementary and Alternative Medi= cine: What You Need To Know To Choose a Practitioner – A Guide for Health C= are Providers and Patients

Project Descr= iption: This resource was developed to help traditional, conventional allopathic healthcare providers and patients make informed decisions about choosing complementary and alternative medicine practitioners. The resource includes information on selected CAM treatment modalities, education and training required for practitioners, licensure, credentialing and laws regulating practices, what to expect during and following treatment, how to find a treatment provider, who to contact with complaints about unprofessional behavior practices. The resource includes a section of general considerations in choosing CAM treatment providers as well as references.

Project Title= : Integrative Health Care Elective

Project Descr= iption: The UW Family Medicine Residency o= ffers elective opportunities and an Area of Concentration for residents to pursue education in CAM approaches in more dept= h than currently offered by the clinical and didactic curriculum. This elective is a one to two week rotation in Integrative Health Care. The residents rotate through clinics in naturopathy, Chinese medicin= e, Acupuncture, Mind-Body Medicine, Nutrition, Massage Therapy and other complementary health care disciplines of interest. <= st1:City w:st=3D"on">Readings in each of these areas are inc= luded in the syllabus. The readings= are tailored to the one to two week option. Goals for the elective include: 1.) patient care (being able to communicate effectively with patients about use= of alternative therapies), 2.) medical knowledge (increase resident knowledge = and understanding of the appropriate use of alternative therapies, know trainin= g of alternative therapy providers, understand philosophy and approach of complementary and alternative therapies, identify several treatment modalit= ies used by each CAM discipline) and 3.) interpersonal and communication skills and professionalism (communicate effectively with alternative health care providers).

5. Name: Michelle D. Garner, MSW, PhD

Project Title= : Contemplating the CAM-Social W= ork Fit & Next Steps

Project Description: Once a month= for a year we have intensely studied the epistemology, technique, and research da= ta about integrative healthcare (IH) practices and health outcomes from a broad heal= th sciences framework. Two questions have guided my quest to contribute and the development of my FIHP project: How does FIHP learning fit= with the social work knowledge base? Contemplating integrative health and social work knowledge bases together, what can I contribute for the benefit of clients? Thus, my contributory project is to conceptually develop the fit and role of IH/compliment= ary and alternative medicine (CAM) within the social work profession. A key= word search of “alternative medicine” and of “CAM” in Social Work Abstracts & Social Services Abstracts literature databa= ses in June 2007 reveals roughly sixty articles total, only two of which, both published in 2000, specifically address these topics in relation to social work; there is ample need for further conceptual development of the roles of social workers amid IH/CAM practices and healthcare teams. I propose that IH/CAM is a worldview. My project will be= a conceptual position paper developing the links between social work and IH/CAM epistemologies that also makes the argument that provider acceptance of IH/= CAM worldviews of their patients’ is central to cultural competency and t= heir patients’ wellbeing. As= such, inclusion of IH/CAM should be included in social work education and the need for experiential learning about the ethnocentricity of allopathic medicine = for social workers and interdisciplinary healthcare teams is implicated. As an extension of this project, t= his next year I will explore an NCAM K07 Academic Career Development grant or an NIH program announcement for Research on Social Work Practice and Concepts = in Health to support development of a conceptual framework and of IH/CAM conte= nt into social work education and of development of experiential learning exercises for interdisciplinary healthcare providers.
