(the center of emotion) and the hippocampus (the center for memory), both
housed in the limbic system, act in concert when emotion meets memory.

</span>Current priorities of NIH Office of Women&#8217;s Health include
identifying the differential effects of therapies on men and women. This
knowledge will aid the development of gender-sensitive and gender-tailored
interventions. The influence of sex and gender on CAM therapies has not been
described. The purpose of this project was to complete a systematic review =
of
literature to describe gender influences on preference, use, and effectiven=
ess
of CAM therapies. A search of the <span class=3DSpellE>PubMed</span> databa=
se and
related articles was completed for papers meeting the following criteria:
published since 2002, in English, including both men and women, available
online in full text format, and excluding studies of children. Results show=
ed
that women have greater use of CAM therapies at all ages and across multiple
conditions and therapies. Gender differences in effectiveness of CAM therap=
ies
were examined in 37 research reviews and 26 individual studies. Only one
research review discussed gender differences in effectiveness and many did =
not
report gender of study participants. Of the individual study reports, 38.5%
analyzed results for gender differences; of these half (n=3D5) found differ=
ences
by gender in effectiveness of the CAM therapy studied. <span class=3DGramE>=

questions have guided my quest to contribute and the development of my FIHP
project: <i style=3D'mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>How does FIHP learning fit=
 with
the social work knowledge base?<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>Contemplating integrative health and social work knowledge bases
together, what can I contribute for the benefit of clients?</i><span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Thus, my contributory project is to
conceptually develop the fit and role of IH/<span class=3DSpellE>compliment=
ary</span>
and alternative medicine (<st1:place w:st=3D"on">CAM</st1:place>) within the
social work profession.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>A key=
 word
search of &#8220;alternative medicine&#8221; and of &#8220;CAM&#8221; in <u=
>Social
Work Abstracts</u> &amp; <u>Social Services Abstracts</u> literature databa=
ses
in June 2007 reveals roughly sixty articles total, only two of which, both
published in 2000, specifically address these topics in relation to social
work; there is ample need for further conceptual development of the roles of
social workers amid IH/CAM practices and healthcare teams.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>I propose that IH/CAM is a
worldview.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>My project will be=
 a conceptual
position paper developing the links between social work and IH/CAM
epistemologies that also makes the argument that provider acceptance of IH/=
CAM
worldviews of their patients&#8217; is central to cultural competency and t=
heir
patients&#8217; wellbeing.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>As=
 such,
inclusion of IH/CAM should be included in social work education and the need
for experiential learning about the ethnocentricity of allopathic medicine =
