Professor, School of Nursing; Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Health Services, School of Public Health; Investigator, Health Promotion Research Center; Lead, UW Coordinating Center, CDC-Healthy Aging Research Network (HAN) Dr. Belza has a sustained record of thoughtful and energetic activity directed toward improving the health of older adults through research. She has built interdisciplinary teams and worked with community partners in testing, disseminating, and adopting evidence-based disease prevention programs for older adults. The effects of these programs have led to improved health outcomes. |

As lead of the UW Coordinating Center for the CDC-Healthy Aging Research Network (CDC-HAN), Dr. Belza has overseen regional and national initiatives and developed successful training and tools for practitioners (www.prc-han.org). She is the lead researcher for EnhanceFitness, an evidence-based physical activity program that is licensed and disseminated by Senior Services. Through her interests in environmental and policy change to support healthy aging, Dr. Belza and her colleagues developed an initiative including webinars and an online community (agingfriendly.org). One component of the initiative is the Environmental and Policy Change (EPC) Clearinghouse, a searchable, annotated database of more than 130 online resources for healthy aging, healthy communities, built environment, and mobility. The Clearinghouse received a 2011 Award for Excellence in Publication from APEX Awards. |

As a leader in rheumatology, Dr. Belza developed the Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue (MAF) scale, which has been translated into 25 languages. Through her scholarship, she has increased the awareness and improved the measurement of fatigue. She served as the scientific editor of the American College of Rheumatologys Postgraduate Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Rheumatology Training Program. This comprehensive, online educational program is an innovative approach to training a critically needed workforce. Dr. Belza is PI of a three-year HRSA-funded gerontological training grant (2009-2012). She mentors undergraduate and graduate students through teaching, academic advisement, and chairing and serving on thesis and doctoral committees. |
