| I am a Research Professor in the Department of Psychosocial and Community Health and Adjunct Research Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. I received my doctorate in clinical psychology at University of Nevada, Reno in 1991 and have been at the University of Washington since that time. My clinical and research interests focus on various aspects of gerontology and geriatrics, particularly helping family and professional caregivers manage behavioral challenges in persons with dementia. I have authored over 100 professional publications and book chapters, plus two books designed to help family caregivers and health care professionals provide more effective and compassionate care to cognitively impaired individuals. My ongoing research includes (1) assessment and treatment of sleep disturbances in older adults with dementia or other co-morbid medical conditions such as chronic pain; (2) development and evaluation of training programs for family and professional staff caring for persons with dementia; and (3) examination of the environmental, behavioral, and psychosocial factors associated with cognitive decline. | |
