Dr. Killien obtained her undergraduate degree in Nursing from St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and her master of nursing and Ph.D. in Nursing Science from the University of Washington. She has been a member of the faculty of the University of Washington since 1982. Dr. Killien's program of research focuses on the promotion of health of employed women and the interface between women's health and their work and family lives. This research has included identifying postpartum concerns of women, examining childbearing decisions of professional couples, delineating daily stressors and coping strategies of working women, and identifying the individual and environmental characteristics that differentiate women with good and poor health outcomes following return to work after childbirth, emphasizing strategies that promote health. She is currently investigating stress in registered nurses arising from interference between their family and employment demands. Dr. Killien is an elected member of the American Academy of Nursing. She is the Co-director of the Center for Women's Health & Gender Research, University of Washington School of Nursing (CWHGR) and Principal Investigator of the Women's Health Nursing Research Training Grant (WHNRTG). In addition, Dr. Killien is Director of the Mentorship Core of the Center for the Advancement of Health Disparities Research, School of Nursing. Dr. Killien is an adjunct professor of Women Studies.
