Associate Professor

Family and Child Nursing

University of Washington
Seattle, WA 98195-7262

Email Address: pjordan@u.washington.edu

Research: Dr. Jordan's program of research focuses on the transition to parenthood and supporting individuals and couples as they become parents. She has developed a middle range theory of the experience of expectant and new fatherhood. Her work with fathers continues to inform the care of men as they become parents. She is currently evaluating the efficacy of the Becoming Parents Program through a randomized clinical trial.

She is the developer of The Becoming Parents Program, a couple-focused educational program for couples who are adding a new baby to the family through birth, adoption, or foster parenting. The program teaches couples survival skills for taking care of their couple relationship, taking care of themselves, relating to their baby, and dealing with the many ways adding a new baby to the family impacts their lives.

Teaching: Dr. Jordan teaches across the curricula of the School of Nursing. Over the past several years she has been particularly active and invested in the BSN curriculum, teaching both theory and clinical courses and focusing on the nursing care of childbearing families.
Service/Practice: Dr. Jordan consults with numerous groups, institutions, and agencies on the Becoming Parents Program and the inclusion and support of fathers in their programs and services. She is also a consultant to the Building Strong Families and Supporting Healthy Marriage Projects-multi-site national clinical trials of couple focused interventions with low income unmarried childbearing and childbearing/childrearing couples respectively--funded by the Administration for Children and Families of the Federal Department of Health and Human Services and the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative (which is using the Becoming Parents Program curriculum with low income childbearing families in Oklahoma). Dr. Jordan is the President of Becoming Parents Program, Inc. (BPP, Inc.), a private company through which she disseminates the Becoming Parents Program curriculum. BPP, Inc. is a Seattle site—one of 8 sites nationally—for the Supporting Healthy Marriage Project.
