I am a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) and have practiced in a variety of settings with diverse populations. My work combines clinical practice in an ambulatory setting serving vulnerable populations, teaching women’s health content in the School of Nursing, and research focused on factors that affect provider practice. I am also interested in safe motherhood programs in Latin America and have an ongoing project with traditional health workers in Guatemala. I have been fortunate to participate in the Citizens of the World program in Guatemala with both undergraduate and graduate nursing students. I helped develop and now teach in an international quarter for undergraduate nursing students in Costa Rica.

My research is based in clinical practice. Projects have included an examination of the clinical practice of midwifery students and differences in practice among various institutions, and ongoing work with a research group that is investigating vaginal birth after cesarean delivery. I am currently working with colleagues to develop a technology enhanced distance learning program for midwifery and neonatal specialties.

I have served on various groups within the American College of Nurse-Midwives, and am currently a member of the Division of Research and the International Health Committee. I volunteer as a clinician for the Rainbow Health Fair, an annual lesbian health fair sponsored by Verbena Health, am a guest speaker on reproductive health for local schools, and serve on the board of Genesis House, a residential drug and alcohol treatment program in the Madrona neighborhood.
