Vital Applicant Information: Letter of Recommendation Tips
Follow-up with a thank you note to the people who write a letter of
reference for you.
Personally ask your old employer, instructors or professional contacts if
they may be contacted that way they are not surprised by the call.
In order for faculty members to write the best possible letter of
recommendation, it is helpful to provide them with the information
outlined below. By providing this information, faculty members can
personalize and individualize their evaluation of you.
In Cover Letter to Writer:
Name and current address
Current date
List of the program to which you are applying
Indicate the deadline for each evaluation. It is a good idea to ask for
an evaluation at least 6 weeks before the first one is due.
Indicate what the evaluation is for: graduate school, professional school,
a job, a fellowship, a general file, etc., give details.
Summarize your relationship with the writer: formal course work (include
the title, grade, and other aspects of your special performance),
research, independent study, informal contact, etc.
Include information on anything "extra" or unique about your academic
background.
Include information on your non-academic background: jobs, hobbies,
sports, community work, political or social involvement, study abroad,
travel, etc.
Include a statement of purpose. (This is also a good way to get feedback
on the draft that you will be sending with your application.)
Indicate whether your evaluations are being considered "open" (that is,
you will be able to read them) or "closed" (you will not be able to read
them).
You may also want to Include Information on:
Awards and Honors (e.g. Deans List, Honors Program).
Organizations and Committees (e.g. American Nurses Association, student
committees).

of committee).

orally, discussion leader).

justification.
