Infectious Disease Adult Nurse Practitioner
Overview
This focus area within the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems and the Master of Nursing program prepares adult nurse practitioners with the specialized education they need to attenuate the alarming increases in the incidence of infectious diseases, including hepatitis (especially Hepatitis C), HIV-AIDS, and TB. Links between infection and chronic illness are being discovered, amplifying the need for nurse practitioners prepared to work with patients afflicted with infections and infectious diseases within the context of family care. Infectious Disease Adult Nurse Practitioners (ID-ANPs) will be prepared to provide primary care to patients with infections and infectious diseases. ID-ANPs will detect infectious diseases and infections, develop and implement treatment plans to limit risk exposure and disease progression, manage disease-related and treatment-related symptoms, monitor compliance, and educate patients, families, and providers in care paradigms. ID-ANPs are prepared to work independently and collaboratively to enhance access to and quality of care for patients and families through cost-effective, outcome-oriented practice.
The focal area, requiring a minimum of 18 months of study, consists
of advanced clinical practice and nursing science built on a
core of intensive pathophysiology, pharmacology, epidemiology,
and microbiology.
