Graduate Non Matriculated: Program Description
Graduate Nonmatriculated (GNM) enrollment allows qualified post-baccalaureate students to take graduate nursing courses in their area of interest, without being admitted by the School of Nursing to a degree program. Additionally, up to 12 credits taken as a GNM student can be applied towards a graduate nursing degree should you apply and be admitted in the future. Please note: International students on F-1 visas are, unfortunately, not eligible for GNM status.
As a practicing nurse you may wish to become more knowledgeable in a certain area, or you may wish to take some graduate level courses on a part-time basis to see whether you want to apply to a graduate degree program. A number of our GNM students are in the process of applying to the School of Nursing.
Up to 12 applicable GNM credits can be applied toward a graduate nursing degree at the University of Washington if you are later accepted to a degree program. Six and ten year limits on GNM courses used towards the fulfillment of master’s and doctoral degrees respectively, apply. An applicant who plans to both transfer credits from a graduate nursing program at another school and apply UW GNM credits towards a School of Nursing degree is limited to a maximum combined total of 12 credits. GNM credit may also apply to residency requirements for graduate degrees.
Acceptance as a GNM student does not imply nor confer priority for later admission to the Graduate School for pursuit of a degree.
GNM registration for each course is on a space available basis and is coordinated through the appropriate GNM Faculty Coordinator, based on a prospective student's area of interest. Care is taken to ensure that nursing courses chosen by the GNM student are appropriate, based on previous education and experience and the education goals of the student.
