Advanced Practice Specialist in Biobehavioral Nursing

Oncology Focus
The school of Nursing offers individualized 12-15 month programs of study to prepare nurses for advanced practice with specialized populations, including cardiopulmonary and cardiovascular*, critical care, neurologic, and oncology patients. Individualized programs are planned around core courses that include basic science (physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology); nursing science (human responses in health and illness, clinical therapeutics); advanced clinical nursing (health assessment, health promotion, disease detection and prevention); advanced clinical fieldwork; and nursing research (knowledge generation and utilization). Elective courses are available for professional role development in areas such as teaching, administration, advanced practice roles, and biomedical ethics. Following completion of appropriate post-graduation clinical hours, graduates are eligible to apply for certification as CCNS (program of the AACN) and as Clinical Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing (program of ANCC).

Students are prepared to:
- Evaluate clinical interventions and programs for a specialized patient population
- Appraise health risks and behaviors
- Assist patients, families and health care providers in planning strategies to monitor and manage cancer and treatment-related symptoms and problems
- Use interdisciplinary collaboration and consultation
- Evaluate cost-effectiveness and outcomes of care
- Analyze, articulate, and facilitate resolution of economic, societal, legislative, ethical, and legal issues related to patient care
- Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for advanced practice
- Develope and use leadership strategies to improve health care
- Demonstrate basic competence in utilizing and conducting nursing research
- Evaluate clinical intervention and programs for a specialized patient population
- Participate in design of innovative care systems for population in need of advanced practice nursing
