DNP Advanced Practice Community Health Systems Nursing

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2008 APPLICATIONS:

Effective for students entering in Summer/Autumn 2008, the Advanced Practice Community Health Systems Nursing (APCHSN) focal area is no longer accepting applications through MEPN or the MN programs. In the future the APCHSN focal area will only be offered through the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Admission for other MEPN and MN eligible focal areas remains the same.

Overview

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Community Health Nursing prepares students for roles in areas such as Policy Analyst, Program Analyst, and Nurse Executive.  In the future However, with the many changes in the health care system and the increasing central role of nurse leaders we expect many of our graduates will create their own roles.

Currently, we offer specialties in communities for youth, healthy aging, rural health, and cross-cultural and global health. We also support individual interests in areas such as cancer control, diabetes prevention or communicable disease prevention. In addition, the DNP in Community Health prepares for the role of Occupational and Environmental Health Specialist (OEHN will continue to admit MN students through January 15th, 2009 as well as admit DNP students entering Summer/Autumn 2008 and Summer/Autumn 2009).

A DNP in Community Health Nursing may be achieved by taking the set of post-baccalaureate to DNP courses (99-117 credits), or the Post-Masters to DNP path for which credits may vary with the requirements of a masters curriculum. Credit requirements will depend on BSN- DNP or Post-Masters-DNP selection, the population of interest and role focus.

The DNP curriculum uses a community health leadership framework to dynamically integrate coursework and clinical internship experiences. A mix of Saturday on-campus and web-based classes allow for e flexible learning to improve access to practice doctorate education.

Course work is designed to fulfill the overall DNP curricular domains of the University of Washington School of Nursing, Seattle: Advanced Nursing Practice, Practice Inquiry and Leadership. In addition, the coursework for the DNP in Community Health Nursing prepares graduates in the Public Health Competencies (Council of Linkages), and the DNP Essentials (American Academy of Colleges of Nursing).

Part-time matriculation may take four years, and full-time, approximately three years of study.  Courses earned at the University of Washington or at another university or college may be waived on a case-by-case basis.
