Advanced Practice Community Health Systems Nursing
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2008 APPLICATIONS:
Effective for students entering in Autumn
2008, the Advanced Practice Community Health Systems Nursing (APCHSN) focal area
is no longer accepting applications through MEPN or
the MN programs. In the future the APCHSN
focal area will only be offered through the Doctor
of Nursing Practice (DNP). Admission for other MEPN and MN eligible focal areas remains the same. |
Curriculum Overview
A DNP in Community Health Nursing may be achieved by taking the set of post-baccalaureate to DNP courses (99-117 credits), or the Post-Masters to DNP path for which credits may vary with the requirements of a masters curriculum. Credit requirements will depend on BSN- DNP or Post-Masters-DNP selection, the population of interest and role focus.
The DNP community health curriculum uses a community health leadership framework to dynamically integrate coursework and clinical internship experiences. A mix of Saturday on-campus and web-based classes allow for e flexible learning to improve access to practice doctorate education.
Course work is designed to fulfill the overall DNP curricular domains of the University of Washington School of Nursing, Seattle: Advanced Nursing Practice, Practice Inquiry and Leadership. In addition, the coursework for the DNP in Community Health Nursing prepares graduates in the Public Health Competencies (Council of Linkages), and the DNP Essentials (American Academy of Colleges of Nursing).
Part-time matriculation may take four years, and full-time, approximately three years of study. Courses earned at the University of Washington or at another university or college may be waived on a case-by-case basis.
Distance
Learning Opportunities
This focus area is accessible
through blended distance learning methods: videoconferences,
internet, telephone, on-campus classes, and periodic site
visits. Web-based instruction will be the primary method to
implement course instruction. Blended distance learning methods
are intended to increase access to students who prefer to
learn in their own communities, while providing selected opportunity
for interdisciplinary learning and face-to-face interaction
with nursing colleagues, students in other disciplines and
professors on the University of Washington campus.
Study
Options
The APCHSN
curriculum prepares students as a GENERALIST in community
health nursing. Students may also pursue preparation as a
POPULATION HEALTH SPECIALIST by focusing their course papers,
projects and internships in a population of interest, and
taking a minimum of three course credits in their area of
interest. Click here for cognate information.
Build
Your Own Program
Build Your Own Program, an individual option, provides the
opportunity for students to enhance and complement their own
interests, combining nursing courses with offerings in the
School of Public Health and Business, the Graduate Program
in Public Affairs, and other departments through the University,
such as Medical History, Ethics, and Psychology. For more
