Welcome to the 2008 Admissions Updates page!
As a service to applicants to the School of Nursing, this page will feature frequent postings
with up-to-the-minute information about this year's admissions process. Applicants
are encouraged to check here regularly for updates, or you can subscribe at the bottom of this page
to receive updates within 24 hours of their addition. Due to the volume of applications we receive,
we are not able to respond to phone, email, or in-person inquiries regarding individual applications.
Official notification about the outcome of applications will be sent by April 15, 2008. MEPN
application notifications were mailed in December 2007. For updates on the MEPN/GEPN admissions process,

Registration information for fall quarter nursing courses and optional summer courses will be mailed to all admitted students by May 1st. Current UW students register for fall quarter courses based on their registration priority date; transfer students and postbaccalaureate students have a registration date of September 1, 2008.
Required immunization clinics will be scheduled for current UW students at the end of May; a schedule will be sent out by May 15th.

If you communicate with the School of Nursing regarding your application, please be aware that:
1. The School of Nursing may discuss some information about an application with the applicant ONLY. Applicants should understand that admissions decisions are final. At the School’s sole discretion, information may be shared with another party if the applicant submits a written and signed release. Absent extraordinary circumstances, the applicant must be present in such discussions about an application, whether on the phone or in person.
2. Use of a raised voice, abusive or threatening language will not be tolerated. Words, volume, and tone of conversations must be professional and focused on the content of the application materials.

Of 358 applicants to the BSN program, 96 were admitted and 16 were placed on a waitlist.
Of 152 applicants to the MN, MS, and Graduate Certificate programs, 115 were admitted and 37 were placed on a waitlist. An additional 15 applications were submitted late or incomplete, and are currently under primary review.
Of 93 applicants to the DNP program, 34 were admitted and 4 were placed on a waitlist.
Of 39 applicants to the PhD program, 24 were admitted and 3 placed on the waitlist.

Final admissions decisions for all programs have been made. Letters notifying all applicants to all programs of admissions decisions have been mailed. Applicants offered admission must respond to the School of Nursing in writing by the date noted in the letter of admission regarding their intent to attend.
BSN APPLICANTS: Profiles of admitted and denied applicants are posted below.
Profile One: Admitted without Proctored Essay
Cumulative grade point average of 3.95; prerequisite sciences grade point average of 3.90; one science prerequisites left to take. UW student with AP credits in sciences and mathematics. The applicant has more than 400 hours of paid work in a community clinic and also volunteers at a Seattle hospital. The applicant is involved in several charitable organizations, participates in neighborhood planning events, and tutors elementary school kids. The applicant is able to communicate in two foreign languages at the intermediate level. The recommendation is written by a nurse manager giving specific strong examples of the applicant’s duties; responsibility as a team member; problem solving and critical thinking ability; caring; and cultural sensitivity. The applicant’s statement is concise and gives several concrete examples of nurse/patient relationships. Cultural statement gives good examples of cultural awareness and demonstrates understanding of diversity of cultural beliefs and values.
Profile Two: Admitted with Proctored Essay
Cumulative grade point average of 3.35; prerequisite sciences grade point average of 4.00. Community college and 4-year school credits. The applicant has been employed in health care for the last eight years with experience in the US and abroad in health care settings. Resume lists teaching experience and volunteer activities on medical missions in the US and abroad. Recommendation is from an RN supervisor and is based on a long term employer/employee relationship with strong examples for each question. The applicant’s statement gives good examples of patient care and clearly explains and explores reasons for pursuing an education in nursing. Examples of competent cultural care and awareness are realistic and reflective. The proctored essay is concise and well written; the essay demonstrates higher than average problem solving skills.
Profile Three: Admitted with Proctored Essay
Cumulative grade point average of 3.10; prerequisite sciences grade point average of 3.50. All prerequisites have been taken; applicant has a prior degree and credits from community colleges and 4-year schools. It is the applicant’s second application to the program. The applicant has six months of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant in a hospital and long term care facility. The applicant volunteers as a tutor for high school students and is involved in neighborhood/church activities. Applicant is able to communicate in two languages other than English. The recommendation was written by the Director of Nursing and gives good examples of the applicant’s maturity, team work, flexibility and professionalism. The applicant’s statement answers the questions in a concise and well thought out essay. The proctored essay responds to the question appropriately and demonstrates good problem solving skills.
Profile Four: Waitlisted
Cumulative grade point average of 3.75; prerequisite sciences grade point average of 3.40. All but one prerequisite course is done. The applicant has attended community college and UW, and has approximately 300 hours of volunteer work in a hospital over a 12 month period. Applicant is involved in athletics and employed part-time in a non-health related field. Recommendation is from a supervisor but not from a Registered Nurse. The applicant’s statement is well written, provides examples of health care experience, and answers questions appropriately. Cultural portion of the essay is addressed but lacks concrete examples. The applicant responded to the proctored essay in a concise manner, and demonstrates empathy and problem solving skills.
Profile Five: Waitlisted
Cumulative grade point average of 2.90; prerequisite sciences grade point average of 3.90. All prerequisites are complete. The applicant has a prior degree in biological sciences and works as a Medical Assistant in a neighborhood clinic. Resume lists evidence of community activism and leadership in employment and community settings. The recommendation is written by the applicant’s supervisor and provides concrete examples of job responsibilities and positive interactions with clients. Applicant speaks four different languages at levels ranging from fluent to intermediate. The applicant’s statement is well written but lacks quality examples of cultural experiences and patient care situations.
Profile Six: Denied
Cumulative grade point average of 3.40; prerequisite sciences grade point average of 3.0. Microbiology, anatomy courses have not been taken and physiology grade is below a 3.0. Applicant has just over 100 hours of health care experience and tutors elementary school children. Applicant has completed a Certified Nursing Assistant program but has not been licensed. Reference letter is from Certified Nursing Assistant program supervisor and cannot address employment situations. The applicant’s statement answers the question but lacks energy and does not give specific examples of patient care situations or cultural awareness. The application was not considered competitive because of the low average grades in the prerequisite sciences courses, lack of health care experience, comparatively weak letter of recommendation, and deficiencies in the application statement. This applicant was not invited to the proctored essay.
Profile Seven: Denied
Cumulative grade point average of 3.30; prerequisite sciences grade point average of 3.10 The applicant was invited to the proctored essay. The applicant has rich health care experience but addressed leadership activities minimally and did not list any community involvement or extracurricular activities. Strong recommendation came from patient care coordinator in the applicant’s employment setting with good examples of patient care experiences. In the applicant’s statement the cultural awareness portion of the question was addressed minimally. Proctored essay question was answered appropriately. The applicant was not considered as competitive as the top applicants due to lack of leadership/service activities and unaddressed portions in the application statement.
Profile Eight: Denied
Cumulative grade point average of 3.10; science prerequisites 3.40. Community college and UW credits; applicant has been at UW for one academic year. Certified Nursing Assistant with good health care experience. Community involvement and extracurricular activities. Good recommendation from RN supervisor. The statement answered the questions but was rated as average. Proctored essay responded appropriately to the questions and demonstrated problem solving. The applicant was not considered as competitive by the committee at this time due to the significantly lower grades at UW and weak writing skills.

Final review of PhD applications has been completed. All PhD applicants will receive written notification of admissions decisions by April 15, 2008. PhD applicants must respond to the School by the posted deadline to reserve a place in the program.
Final review of MN, MS, and Graduate Certificate (GCPAPN) applications will be completed by this Monday, March 24, 2008. Final review of BSN and DNP applications will be completed by March 31, 2008. Written notification of admissions decisions will be sent and information for denied BSN applicants will be posted at this site no later than April 15, 2008.
Applicants admitted to begin graduate study in Autumn Quarter 2008 are invited to participate in UW GO-MAP (Graduate Opportunity & Minority Achievement Program)'s Prospective Student Days on April 3-4, 2008, including a reception, campus tour, informational lunch, opportunities to network with students and faculty from various departments, and to learn about funding, housing, campus climate, and living in Seattle. Graduate Applicants: All applications are currently undergoing second and third reviews. Final admissions meetings for all graduate programs will take place during the month of March. Applicants will receive notification of admissions decisions no later than April 15, 2007.
BSN Applicants: Proctored essays are now undergoing primary review. Applications will undergo third and fourth reviews beginning next week. The final admissions meeting will take place at the end of March. Applicants will receive notification of admissions decisions no later than April 15, 2007.

Graduate Applicants: Preliminary review of MN, MS, GCPAPN, DNP, and PhD applications is complete. Primary reviews (by focal area/specialty faculty members for MN, GCPAPN, and DNP) have begun. Official letters notifying applicants of graduate admissions decisions will be mailed no later than April 15th. Phone and/or email notification of admissions decisions may be made as early as March 3rd.
BSN Applicants: At this time, a small percentage of BSN applicants (6 total) have been offered admission via email. Other BSN applicants (142) will be notified via email that they are not considered competitive and have been denied admission. All email notifications have been sent. ALL applicants will receive an official status letter by April 15th.
**DENIED BSN APPLICANTS who were insufficiently competitive:
Had taken 4 of 6 science courses with GPA of less than 2.8 in those courses, and/or
Had taken 3 of 6 science courses with GPA of less than 3.0 in those courses, and/or
Had taken less than 50% (3) of the natural sciences prerequisite courses, and/or
Had less that 100 hours of health care experience in one setting for three months, and/or
Did not respond to required questions in the Personal Statement, and/or
Submitted incomplete files by the deadline of January 15, and/or
Submitted files that did not effectively communicate how their experience and thinking make them strong candidates for the BSN program.
**ADMITTED BSN APPLICANTS met or exceeded each criterion at a very high level.
**BSN APPLICANTS NEITHER ADMITTED NOR DENIED AT THIS TIME:
Have been invited to write a 1-hour proctored essay on February 20 (see details below);
Will receive a third and potentially a fourth review; and
Will be notified of admissions decision (admit, deny, or waitlist) around April 15th.
BSN PROCTORED ESSAY INFORMATION: The proctored essay session will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, 6:30-7:30pm. You must receive an email invitation to write the essay. Follow these instructions carefully:
Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the time the session is to begin (i.e. 6:15pm). Latecomers will not be allowed to write the proctored essay.
Bring a PHOTO ID. We cannot accept a completed essay without your photo ID.
Do not bring cell phones, other electronic devices, OR backpacks to the session. Dictionaries are not permitted. If you do bring any of these things, you will be required to turn all devices off and to store your belongings away from where you are seated. Pens will be provided, though you may also bring your own.

Preliminary review of BSN applications is now complete. All BSN files received a minimum of two blinded reviews. The School will notify BSN applicants via email starting on Thursday, February 7, 2008 as to the outcome of this stage of the review process. BSN Applicants: please check your email no later than Monday, February 11, 2008. If you are invited to write the proctored essay on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, make arrangements now to arrive no later than 6:20pm that evening. There will be no alternate time for the proctored essay.
Graduate Applicants: Files continue to be checked for completion and are beginning to undergo preliminary review.

BSN APPLICATIONS are undergoing preliminarily review. All BSN files receive a minimum of two blinded reviews. The next step of the BSN process will be selection and notification of applicants to write the proctored essay on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 6:30pm. BSN applicants, please mark this date in your calendar. There will be no alternate time for the proctored essay.
MN, MS, AND GCPAPN APPLICATIONS are currently being checked for completion. Masters applicants with incomplete files will be contacted directly. The next step of the MN, MS, and GCPAPN process is to complete GPA calculation and begin preliminary review.
DNP APPLICATIONS are being checked for completion. Preliminary review of post-masters DNP applications will begin on February 4, 2008. The next step of the DNP review process is preliminary review of post-BSN DNP applications.
PhD APPLICATIONS are currently being reviewed for completion and prepared for data review. Preliminary review of PhD applications will begin the week of February 4, 2008.

Applications received are listed above. Applications received after the deadline are included in these totals but are ineligible for consideration. All applications have been assembled and are being reviewed for completeness. GPAs have been calculated for all complete files. Preliminary review of BSN files will begin January 22, 2008. Graduate file preliminary review will begin the week of February 4, 2008.
