Measuring Adolescent Potential for Suicide (MAPS)

NIH, National Institute of Nursing Research: 1994-2000

The purpose of this project is to further evaluate the MAPS (Measure of Adolescent Potential for Suicide) for assessing and interventing in:

  • direct suicide-risk thoughts and behaviors
  • ,
  • related risk factors (e.g., depression, poor school achievement), and
  • protective factors (e.g., personal resources, social support).
The MAPS protocol is a crisis intervention that has three elements:
  1. A computer-assisted, survey questionnaire and structured interview
  2. A follow-up "connection" with a trusted adult at school (e.g., counselor, favorite teacher, coach)
  3. A follow-up telephone conference with a parent or guardian
