Promoting Competence and Support To Prevent Suicide Risk (CAST)

NIH, National Institute of Nursing Research: 1995-2000

The purpose of CAST is to evaluate the effectiveness of three brief youth suicide interventions:

  1. The Beck
  2. MAPS (Measure of Adolescent Potential for Suicide) protocol, a brief crisis intervention designed to enhance social network support
  3. MAPS+CAST(Coping and Support Training, a life-skills training program)
  4. Specifically, we are evaluating their effectiveness in relation to the following:
  • decreasing suicide-risk behaviors,
  • decreasing drug involvement,
  • decreasing depression, and
  • increasing school achievement.
