Assessing Suicide Risk in Adolescents

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: 1998-2001

Two student groups--high-risk youth and non-risk youth--are involved in this study, and will complete the High School Questionnaire (HSQ) and the Screen for Youth Suicide Risk (SYSR). The SYSR is a 15-minute interview that can assess the level of suicide risk in adolescents. It builds on our work in the RY program to assess and intervene with students at risk of suicide.

This study has two goals:
  1. to evaluate the HSQ and SYSR for identifying students at suicide risk and for testing the effectiveness of intervention programs such as RY, and
  2. to better understand both the factors that protect students from suicide risk and those that increase suicide risk.
