Reconnecting Youth Prevention Research Program

Research Projects

We are concerned about teens at risk for high school failure:
  • Those whose grades are low or sliding, who skip school, who drop out;
  • Those who are depressed and evidence suicide-risk behaviors; or
  • Those who show signs of involvement with alcohol and/or other drugs.
Our research shows that the Reconnecting Youth program produced the following success for students:
  • More earned credits with higher grade point averages;
  • Decreased drug involvement;
  • Decreased depression, stress, anger, and tendencies toward suicide;
  • Increased self-esteem and personal control;
  • Increased support from their school (favorite teachers, counselors); and
  • Increased support from friends and family.
In the end, this research will help all of us--parents, students, schools, and all of society:
  • Youth at suicide risk will be directed to interventions that help them enhance their personal coping skills and their social resources, thus reducing their risk of suicide.
  • Schools will have increased help and resources to deal with distressed students.
  • Parents will gain increased understanding and help in taking action.
  • Society will gain a better understanding of the factors that contribute to youth suicide and of the most effective ways to minimize risk.
