Reconnecting Youth Prevention Research Program
Research
Projects
We are concerned about teens
at risk for high school failure:
- Those whose grades are low or sliding, who
skip school, who drop out;
- Those who are depressed and evidence suicide-risk
behaviors; or
- Those who show signs of involvement with
alcohol and/or other drugs.
Our research shows that the Reconnecting Youth program produced
the following success for students:
- More earned credits with higher grade point
averages;
- Decreased drug involvement;
- Decreased depression, stress, anger, and
tendencies toward suicide;
- Increased self-esteem and personal control;
- Increased support from their school (favorite
teachers, counselors); and
- Increased support from friends and family.
In the end, this research will help all of us--parents, students,
schools, and all of society:
- Youth at suicide risk will be directed to
interventions that help them enhance their personal coping
skills and their social resources, thus reducing their risk
of suicide.
- Schools will have increased help and resources
to deal with distressed students.
- Parents will gain increased understanding
and help in taking action.
- Society will gain a better understanding
of the factors that contribute to youth suicide and of the
most effective ways to minimize risk.
