I am currently Professor Emeritus and Project Director of the Nursing Research Training in Substance Abuse Project funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). See LINK for more information about the NIDA Research Training program including trainee qualifications and the admission process.
I conduct both longitudinal prospective studies of loss accommodation and randomized clinical trials that test the efficacy of bereavement interventions.
A sub-set of trauma research involves studying the work experiences and work environment of urban fire fighters. I am especially interested in the influence of the work environment on stress and coping responses and on the development of "sub-cultures" within the fire service.
I am board-certified by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and listed in the 1998 and 1999 Media Guide to Health Experts published by Sigma Theta Tau, an international nursing honor society. I am also a member of the American Academy of Nursing.
A second area of expertise is nursing research training in addictions. (Please see other websites). Research interests in addictions is integrated into trauma research as well as other vulnerable groups. For the past 10 years, I have served on the Board of Directors of Perinatal Treatment Services, a non-profit organization that provides treatment to addicted pregnant and parenting women.
