PART I. Leadership
Activity: We have completed one education handout (in English and Spanish)for families, on craniosynostosis, but have not been able to complete a "set" with a version for community providers and one for in hospital providers as we had hoped to do. I have also almost completed a second handout combining several disparate existing documents on feeding a baby with a cleft palate.

Advocacy Services

Health Education
Outcome: I have a better understanding of the barriers to developing patient education materials in an environment where there are many competing demands on one's time. It was far more complex bringing all the steps together than I expected. If we are to really succeed at this venture, we need much more institutional support than we are receiving, and having been through the process, we can better delineate what that support needs to be.

PART II. Cultural Competence

Cultural Acknoledgement and Respect

Additional Activity: We had the brochure translated into Spanish and had several native Spanish speakers review it prior to publication.

Outcome: To become aware that making a document for a population that speaks another language is more than translating the words. There were several words and phrases that in English didn't sound "right" to me, but in the opinion of the reviewers got our point across better in Spanish.

Faculty Comments: Bay, Sounds like this has a frustrating experience for you. It always seems like the process of developing new materials takes longer than planned. I think that despite being frustrating, you have also had a great learning experience and what you have learned in this process will be very valuable in the future. Will you also have parents involved in the review process? Great job! Michele
