PART I. Leadership
Activity: I administered a needs assessment to the adult Latino community at the beginning of the quarter regarding perceived nutritional needs. The children had the experience of learning about nutrition last quarter, thus this quarter the adults were assessed. The needs assessment is guiding me in developing a program on nutrition for high-risk populations in my clinical community, the Windsor Apartments located at the New Futures site. I decided that since adults are the main food preparers for the children, and the children had learned about nutrition, the adults should be the aim of the program. In this way, both the children and the adults are learning about healthy nutrition. I needed to address the ALL Spanish speaking population about the assessment and arranged for an interpreter. However, I had prewritten my introduction in Spanish (confirmed that grammar and syntax was correct by a UW professor) explaining what the assessment was about. Instead of totally using the interpreter, I spoke to the group myself in Spanish explaining whom I was, why I was always at the New Futures site, and gave an intro about the assessment. spoke The major details of the assessment were explained in Spanish by my clinical advisor. The program I am developing is based on the Social Learning Theory using the PRECEDE/PROCEED method. The program offers suggestions on planning, implementing, and sustaining the program after I am gone. The program also lists/suggests non-profit potential partners that will help sustain the program based on the changing needs of the community. The program is aimed at the Latino community, however, since the community is multicultural the program is being designed with cultural competence so that all cultures within the community can benefit. At the end of the quarter, a nutritional class will be held for the participants of the assessment.I wil also be presenting the assesment findings to the community membersand, on request of the Community Developer at New Futers, to New Futures partner in nutitional education-Food Sense. New Futures and Food sense will in addition get a copy of the program recommendations. At the end of last quarter I supported the undergraduate nursing students by attending their health fair (Dentawl and ye screaning were the main themes) for the same community where I am doing clinical. I presented a bilingual poster board (English and Spanish)regarding nutrition (centering around high calcium foods for strong teeth). at the health fair.

Health Education
Outcome: Last quarter I felt as if I was an intuder to the community I was working with. When I met with the Community Developer and Latino Family Advocate at the begining of this quarter I presented my proposal for the assessment and a nutritional progam evaluation/plan. Both were thrilled and at that moment I felt a part of the team. Instead of questioning my every move they gave me full reign on my proposal. I took those reins and am now running with it. The community will end up with nutritional education that they percieve is needed, and I hope sustainable. This project is teaching me how theory is applied in reality. It is exciting to actually see and be a part of the process. I will continue building my skills and strengths by continuing to be an advocate for community needs, learning more about other health behavior theories that can held design future programs and policies.

PART II. Cultural Competence

Scientific Mindness
Cultural Self/System-Assessment
Cultural Acknoledgement and Respect

Additional Activity:

Outcome: E1-In performing the needs assessment I based my questions on parts of the Social Cognitive Theory,(environment/situation, self-efficacy,and behavioral capabilities). I also asked about percieved barriers to attaining healthy foods. E3-adapted to diversity by acknowledging the diversity in the system I am working, regarding the need for a program in nutrition that was culturally diverse. E4-I have tried to increase my skills in speaking Spanish and using them when I am around Latino community members. I have learned much regarding Latino beliefs about food and nutrition, but have only scratched the surface.

Faculty Comments: Diane: Wow - you've come a long way since fall quarter. I can see how you have assimilated course work on social determinants of health into this clinical. You've also done a magnificient job in applying the population at risk concepts to the community assessment, and it's clear you understand the connection between the use of theory in guiding program development and implementation. I am especially proud of your partnership building skills. What is your plan to implement: impact, process and outcome evaluation of this project?
