Nursing Leadership Enhancement for Culturally Competent Care: Children with Special Health Care Needs, their Families and Communities

THE LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIO

[Development of the Leadership Portfolio was supported in part by the Nursing Graduate Leadership Enhancement for Culturally Competent Care: Children and Adolescents with Special Health Care Needs, Families and Communities Training Grant, Number 5 T80 MC 00002-37, funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The contents, however, are in no way the responsibility of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.]

The purpose of the Leadership Portfolio is to assist you in selecting graduate program activities over the course of your studies which will continue to build your leadership skills. In your first year of participation with the program, you would complete two quarterly summaries of your activities.

The goal is to complete an activity for each of the 5 leadership categories in respect to the population of children with special health care needs while you are in graduate school.

These Leadership Categories are:
Infrastructure Building
Population-Based Approach Services
Advocacy Services
Direct Health Care Services
Cultural Competence

Click on the links above for the definition of each of these categories. Note also how these leadership categories are depicted in the pyramid structure on the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) Model for public health services.

MCHB PYRAMID MODEL

You may decide to concentrate on one category more than others. You may also decide to work on the same activity over more than one quarter but there would then be expanded or new outcomes.

The Leadership Portfolio has been useful for graduates as a way to illustrate to prospective employers your experience with leadership oriented activities.

HOW TO COMPLETE THE QUARTERLY SUMMARY

Master's students complete the online Quarterly Summary in two quarters of their first year of participation. We have built into the online survey an opportunity for faculty to dialog with you as well. To begin filling out the Quarterly Summary survey click on "Complete the Quarterly Summary" in the top left-hand corner of this screen.

To begin, fill in your name, the name of your grant advisor, your student status and current quarter.

Part I: Leadership

1. Describe ONE leadership activity for the quarter. Be as detailed and concise as possible.

2. Select (by checking the corresponding box) the PRIMARY leadership category listed that applies to your activity. Then go to that category below and check the PRIMARY sub-category that applies to the category selected above. (choose only one category and only one sub-category)

3. Describe how involvement in the activity strengthened your skills in the sub-category you checked above. Include a plan (2-3 sentences) for how you will build on this strength in your future work or classroom activities.

Part II: Cultural Comptetence

1. Select the elements of cultural comptetence that apply to your activity. You may check as many as apply. If the activity did not include elements of cultural competence, describe another activity (4-5 sentences) that did and check the elements that apply to that activity.

2. Describe how the activity strengthened your skills in the elements you selected above. Include a plan (2-3 sentences) for how you will build on this strength in your future work or classroom activities.

Final Step: Submit the completed summary by clicking on the 'submit' button at the bottom of the survey.
