Children with ADHD: A Manual with Decision Tree and Clinical Path
Children and Youth 6-14 years of Age

For Advanced Practice Nurses, Physicians, Mental Health Specialists and other Health Care Providers

Developed by: Diane Magyary, Ph.D., Patricia Brandt, Ph.D. and Andrea Kovalesky, Ph.D., School of Nursing, University of Washington. Consultation and field testing occurred using a team of interdisciplinary clinicains. Funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (#2 MCJ 000909).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common problems seen by pediatric providers, with at least 3-5% of all children in the United States having this diagnosis. And yet, ADHD is a difficult diagnosis to confirm. Too often ADHD is confused with other types of diagnoses or ADHD co-occurs with other diagnoses.

Children with ADHD: A Manual with Decision Tree and Clinical Path (1997, Revised 1999) was developed for both primary and specialty health care practitioners in recognition of the challenges to derive a diagnosis of ADHD and to develop a systematic and comprehensive management plan. Consideration was also given to the efficiency demands required by health care reform.

The ADHD Manual is a clincal practice guideline that includes a decision tree and clinical path with outcome statements. The Decision Tree for Assessment and Management of ADHD depicts an overview of the reasoning process and decisions involved in the diagnosis and management of this complex condition. The Clinical Path Assessment and Diagnosis lists 22 clinical outcome statements that need to be addressed by the clinician during the initial phase of assessment and diagnosis.

The Manual contains 18 Appendices of comprehensive information on ADHD ranging from information on differential diagnoses, stimulant and non-stimulant medications, assessment measures, the latest child, family and school interventions, and various handouts for families and schools. In addition, 3 inserts are included with the Manual that are designed to be part of the child's chart.
