Auction Fund
What is it?
BNHS holds an annual Service Auction in the Fall that faculty and staff are invited to attend. The purpose of the auction is to build camaraderie, raise funds for use by the department, and share our talents with our colleagues. Departmental staff and faculty are invited to donate and purchase goods and services that serve as auction items for others to bid on. In the past, services that faculty and staff can offer to each other have been most popular. Examples of services in the past include but are not limited to: water skiing on Lake Washington with breakfast, fresh smoked salmon, frozen dinners for six, organized theme parties for children, dog sitting, home made pies and other desserts, flying in a private plane over the Puget Sound, editing papers, grant writing, office painting, hand crocheted hats and mittens, hand made jewelry, and office organizing. The money raised goes to help fund departments events and recognizing individual accomplishments or losses both within and outside of the department. Each year the auction nets, on average, $1,000-2,000.
Who plans it?
Three staff volunteers are in charge of these areas:
Catering for the luncheon, arranging volunteer groups for set-up & clean-up
Coordinating incoming items
Publicity for the auction & luncheon
Faculty volunteers are MC's for the event.
What are the proceeds used for?
The funds are to be used for BNHS members and their family, faculty emeritus, and other BNHS friends. No specific amount has been established for each category but it is hoped that the money will be allocated so that funds remain available throughout the year.
Acknowledgement of transitional events (wedding, births, special awards, etc.)
Illness (surgery, etc.)
Memorials
Spring Tea
Select BNHS events (those parties in which everyone is invited: student recognition parties, farewell parties, etc.)
Select events that may involve only a subset of faculty and/or staff (farewell breakfast for a staff member only attended by staff, etc.)
How are funds distributed?
Any BNHS faculty or staff member can request auction funds for any of the above uses. The request will be reviewed by the Department Chair and Administrator.
Thank You Box
What Is It?
Well, as the name implies, the BNHS Thank You Box is a way for each of us to say "Thank You!" to someone we work with. The Box is filled with many small gifts and tokens of appreciation, including everyone's favorite stuffed diseases! Nothing says "Thank You" like syphilis!
Who Gets to Use It?
All faculty and staff are encouraged to recognize their co-workers and the contributions we each make to the daily functioning of our department. But if a co-worker goes beyond the call of duty, does something particularly well, or maybe just cheers up your day and helps you through a particularly rough grant, you might consider thanking them with a special gift from the Thank You Box.
If you'd like to recognize someone, please contact Laurie Rossnagel to arrange a time to stop by with that person so they can select their gift!
