Hiring Actions

There are several types of hiring actions for new positions, depending on what type of person you want to hire.  Key people in hiring actions include the Chair, Vice Chair for Teaching, Assistant to the Chair, Administrator, Payroll Coordinator and supervisors.

Faculty

Permanent faculty positions are handled through national searches.  Temporary faculty positions are filled locally and faculty can be hired for one quarter or one year.  This involves instructors, evaluators, researchers, consultants or related categories. Faculty with any UW appointments are paid through the UW payroll system, and budgets are charged the appropriate benefits rate.  Faculty at other institutions may need to be hired through a subcontract.  To hire faculty, contact Lisa Sali or Eleanor Bond, BNHS Vice Chair.  To explore subcontract questions, contact Susan Graham, or Kendra Hayward

Staff/Students

There are many different types of non-faculty hires and all require involvement by the department and Human Resources.  In no case can a section have someone start working BEFORE the hiring actions are done.  The following are categories of hires:

Permanent Staff

Staff who are 50-100% and hired for 12 months or longer are permanent staff.  New positions for permanent staff must be established through Human Resources and require a series of actions.  Contact Laurie Rossnagel at to consider establishing a new position, and provide her the following:  job description, prerequisites, budget number, start and end dates, anticipated salary range, and percentage you wish to pay.  She will work with you on the actions required.  Note there are several types of permanent staff including professional, contract classified, non-contract, etc.   Plan 4-6 weeks to process the hire before a person can start work.

Temporary Staff

Options for temporary staff are varied and include staff hired at less than 50%, hourly staff, limited term (up to 11 months) professional staff, work study students, etc.  For each of these, contact Matt Eng, mneng@u, and provide him a job description, prerequisites, budget number, start and end dates, anticipated salary.  Also tell him whether you have a person identified to hire.  Plan at least 1 week to process a hire before a person can start work.

Ases/GRAD STUDENTS (ALSO CALLED Ras, Tas, Sas,)

ASEs can be hired at 50%, and get tuition benefits if they meet requirements for credits and duration.  They can also be hired at less than 50% or hourly.  Positions for all ASEs must be advertised and open to all who want to apply.  Contact Matt Eng, mneng@u or Jaime Palmer, jpalmer2@u for further information.  ASEs can be hired within 1-3 weeks.

Trainees

Trainees on funded projects can also be hired to do other work as long as it’s separate and distinct from their trainee duties, and their program director approves.  Postdocs doing additional work will be paid a similar rate to others doing the same work (eg part time lecturers or research nurses).  Pay is normally set sot the stipend equals 60% of their pay and the additional work equals 40%.
