Space Assignments
2006-08 BNHS Space Practices
Assigning Space
There are 4 types of space available in BNHS, allocated this biennium and into the next biennium per the following groupings:
1. Private offices are provided for tenure track faculty, senior managers (grade 8 and above) and the primary payroll coordinator. More senior faculty get first dibs on window offices when they become available.
2. A workstation with a dedicated computer or laptop in a shared office is provided for research faculty, temporary faculty and instructors, visiting scholars, and post-docs who don’t have space elsewhere. The quality of space or amount of privacy will vary, based on factors like # hours working each week in BNHS, type of work to be done, etc. Offices typically house 2-4 people, depending on size and layout. Occasionally a tiny office becomes available for someone in this group. Also occasionally lecturers are asked to share their computer with another lecturer.
3. A workstation with a dedicated computer in a shared office or an open part of a suite is provided for other managers and also for staff paid by state funds doing admin support.
4. Shared workstations with shared computers in group rooms are provided if available for personnel paid completely from grants, TA/RA/SAs, hourly staff, and Emeritus faculty. NOTE: Better grant space may be available from ONR or by going off campus.
Moves
Dept administrator is contact for space changes, and requests can be made anytime by anyone. Simple moves are normally done between quarters, and major ones are done in summer. Staff assistance is normally available for phone/computer changes, physically moving furniture, computers and boxes of files, putting file cabinet contents into boxes, and interacting with Physical Plant staff. Room occupants are responsible for safeguarding papers not in file cabinets and personal items.
Furnishings
All employees are entitled to ergonomically safe chairs, desks and computer set-ups, work areas free from hazards, a secure area to lock up valuables, and limited filing space or shelves. When furniture needs to be replaced, occupants can provide input about what to buy. UW employees cannot take used furniture/equipment home or purchase it instead of surplusing it. Furniture purchases are done in summer when possible, and cabinets are bolted to the wall when possible.
Occupants can provide own rugs, lighting, small pieces of furniture and decorations as long as the building isn’t damaged. Painting and carpeting are not normally provided, unless there’s a reason (eg walls need repair.)
