Gail Synoground Receives Alumna of the Year Honor

Gail Synoground ’57 MN, ’63 EdD, ARNP, received the 2002 Distinguished Alumna of the Year award at the 24th Annual Friends of Nursing Dinner in October.

Synoground has been a leader in health care and health care education for children and the disadvantaged. She developed a nurse-managed clinic for homeless, uninsured and underinsured children in Spokane that later expanded to include free or low-cost health -care services for families and adults. It serves more than 300 patients each month. As a faculty member of the Intercollegiate College of Nursing, Synoground developed and implemented a school nurse program for Washington state certification and developed a protocol for the annual School Nurse Institute. She has been a tireless volunteer on behalf of children in her community and has provided national leadership to the National Associated School Nurse Educators Group and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners. She was also twice appointed to the editorial board of the Journal of School Nurses, among other professional achievements.

Synoground’s many awards include the Loretta Ford Leadership Award for innovative nurse practitioner practice; the ICN Excellence in Service Award; and both the Nurse Excellence in Teaching Award and the Nursing Service award from the Delta Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. She was also inducted into the National Association of School Nurse Academy of Fellows.

The Friends of Nursing Dinner is cosponsored by the Nursing Alumni Advisory Council, the UW Alumni Association, and the School.
