Headlines | Briefly | From the Deans Desk
It is with great sadness that the School of Nursing announces the death of Warren Featherstone ("Feather") Reid on October 20, 2002. Dean Nancy Woods recalled Reid’s compassion for those whose needs were greatest and unmet. "He stimulated us to imagine a kinder world of health care."
A graduate of the University of Washington, Reid served under Senator Warren G. Magnuson for almost 20 years, advising Congress on initiatives such as Medicare and Medicaid and working to expand federal support for research. He also helped establish the Nurse Training Act, the National Health Service Corps, and the National Health Manpower Act. As a later advisor to Governor Booth Gardner., Reid helped to pass the Basic Health Plan and the Washington Health Services Act of 1993. In honor of his contributions to health care, the Washington state legislature created the Warren Featherstone Reid Award for Excellence in Health Care.
Never content to sit on the sidelines when there was work to be done, Reid joined the School’s Visiting Committee (now called the Advisory Board) after his retirement in 1993. He became chairman in 1998, a position he held until he became ill early this year.
"Feather’s wisdom and his humanity will be missed by us all," says Woods.
